Exterior Mirrors Will Not Automatically Return When Shifting From Reverse to Drive

Applicability

The information contained in this TSIB supersedes the information in TSIB No. EL004-07. The key changes to note are:

^ Applicability has been updated to include 2006 model year RX 330, 2007 - 2009 RX 350, and 2006 - 2008 RX 400h vehicles.

^ Repair Procedure now consists of 2 sections: Mirror ECU Replacement and Mirror Actuator Replacement (2004 - 2005 MY RX 330 only).

TSIB No. EL004-07 is Obsolete and any printed versions should be discarded. Be sure to review the entire content of this service bulletin before proceeding.

Introduction

Some 2004 - 2006 model year RX 330 2007 - 2009 model year RX 350 and 2006 - 2008 model year RX 400h vehicles may experience a condition where one or both of the outer rear view mirrors will not automatically return to the proper position when shifting from reverse to drive. A newly designed mirror ECU is available to correct this condition. For 2004 - 2005 model year RX 330 vehicles it is also necessary to replace the mirror actuator. This condition does not affect the manual operation of the exterior mirrors from the adjustment switch.

^ This repair is covered under the Lexus Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

^ Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin.

Repair Procedure: Mirror ECU Replacement

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

CAUTION

Wait at least 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery before starting the operation.

2. Remove the front door inside handle bezel plug.





Using a plastic pry tool disengage the 3 claws and remove the front door inside handle bezel plug.





3. Remove the power window regulator master switch assembly.

A. Using a plastic pry tool disengage the 2 claws and the 2 clips.

B. Disconnect the connector and remove the power window regulator master switch assembly.





4. Remove the door armrest cover.





5. Remove the front door lower frame bracket garnish.

Using a plastic pry tool disengage the 2 clips and claw and remove the front door lower frame bracket garnish.

6. Remove the front door trim board sub-assembly.





A. Remove the 2 screws.

B. Remove clip A.

C. Pulling the front door trim board sub-assembly in the direction of the arrow shown in the illustration disengage the 15 clips.

D. Disconnect the cable and each connector from the back side of the inside handle and remove the front door trim board sub-assembly.





7. Locate the mirror ECU and disconnect both wiring harness connectors.

8. Remove the 2 bolts that are holding the mirror ECU in place.

9. Remove and replace the mirror ECU with the updated part.





10. Install the updated mirror ECU using the 2 existing bolts.

11. Reconnect the 2 wiring harnesses.

12. Install the front door trim board sub-assembly.

13. Install the front door lower frame bracket garnish. Install the door armrest cover.

14. Install the power window regulator master switch assembly.

15. Install the front door inside handle bezel plug.

NOTE

For 2004 - 2005 MY RX 330 skip to the next section for mirror actuator replacement.

16. Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

17. Check operations of the mirrors.

18. Re-initialize the affected power systems.

Repair Procedure: 2004 - 2005 MY Mirror Actuator Replacement

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

2. Disconnect the mirror.

A. To prevent damage apply protective tape on the lower side of the mirror body.

B. Push the upper corner of the mirror to tilt out the lower corner.





C. Insert a flat blade screwdriver between the mirror holder (black) and plate pivot (white) and twist to disconnect the 2 lower claws.





D. Push the lower side of the plate pivot to tilt it down.

E. Pull up the mirror to disconnect the 2 upper claws.





F. For heated mirrors:

Disconnect both 1-pin heater connectors from the mirror assembly.

G. Take oft the ECM connector from the mirror assembly and pull off the white connector.

3. Remove the mirror actuator.





A. Remove the 3 screws from the actuator.

B. Gently disconnect the 3 connectors from the mirror actuator.
Disconnect the hidden 5-pin connector by pushing down on the lock tab.

C. Remove the OLD actuator and discard.

4. Assemble a NEW actuator and mirror.

NOTE

^ Reassembly is the reverse order of disassembly.

^ You MUST fit in the harness connector correctly.





A. Confirm correct connector color indication on the back surface of the mirror actuator (one gray and one black flat 2-pin connector).

B. Tighten the 3 screws for the actuator.

Torque: 1.5-1.96 N*m (5.30-19.99 kgf*cm,
13.28- 17.35 in*lbf)





C. For heated mirrors:
Resecure the heater terminals.

D. Connect the ECM connector to the mirror assembly.





E. Hook the upper claws of the mirror holder into the plate pivot.





F. Reconnect the mirror holder - Apply pressure to the indicated areas until you hear the holder clips snap into place.

NOTICE
If pressure is applied in areas other than the ones indicated, the mirror glass may break.

5. Repeat steps 2A through 4E on the opposite side rear view mirror.

6. Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

7. Test normal operation of mirrors.

8. Remove the protective tape and clean the mirror housing and glass.

9. Re-initialize power systems.
