Parking Brake System: Service and Repair
PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLYCOMPONENTS:
DISASSEMBLY
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER MOUNTING WITH REAR BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 washers and brake cylinder mounting with brake cylinder.
b. Suspend the brake cylinder mounting with brake cylinder. Ensure that the flexible hose is not stretched.
3. REMOVE REAR DISC
a. Put matchmarks on the disc and axle hub.
b. Remove the disc.
HINT: If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the disc turns freely.
4. REMOVE TENSION SPRING
a. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the spring and tension spring.
5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING
a. Using SST, remove the 2 return tension springs.

6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT LH
a. Remove the shoe strut and spring.
7. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE, ADJUSTER AND TENSION SPRING
a. Slide out the rear brake shoe and remove the adjuster.
b. Remove the tension spring.
c. Remove the 2 shoe hold down spring cups, shoe hold down spring and pin.
8. REMOVE FRONT BRAKE SHOE
a. Slide out the front brake shoe.
b. Disconnect the No. 2 parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.
c. Remove the 2 shoe hold down spring cups, shoe hold down spring and pin.
9. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE BELL CRANK LH
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer.
b. Remove the pin and disconnect the No. 2 parking brake cable from the bell crank.
c. Remove the clip and pin.
d. Disconnect the parking brake cable and remove the clip.
e. Remove the 2 tension springs.
f. Remove the 2 bolts and bell crank.
g. Turn the boot over from the bell crank bracket.
h. Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer and pin.
i. Remove the bell crank from the bell crank bracket.
REASSEMBLY
Reassembly is in the reverse order of disassembly. However, only installation procedures requiring additional information are included.
NOTICE: Apply high temperature grease and lithium soap base glycol grease to the parts indicated by the arrows.
1. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
a. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the bell crank.
b. Remove the bell crank spring.
c. Loosen the bell crank adjusting bolt.
d. Temporarily install the 3 hub nuts.
e. Remove the hole plug.
f. Turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks.
g. Return the adjuster 8 notches.
h. Install the hole plug.
2. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE BELL CRANK
a. Pull the bell crank until all play in the interior linkage is taken up.
b. Screw in the bell crank adjusting bolt to where it contacts on the dust seal.
c. Loosen it one turn, and lock it at that position with the lock nut.
Torque: 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.)
d. Install the bell crank spring.
e. Connect the parking brake cable.
f. Remove the 3 hub nuts.
3. SETTLE PARKING BRAKE SHOE AND REAR DISC
a. Drive the vehicle at about 50 km/h (31 mph) on a safe, level and dry road.
b. With the parking brake release button pushed in, pull on the lever with 88 N (9 kgf, 19.8 lbs.) of force.
c. Drive the vehicle for about 400 m (0.25 miles) in this condition.
d. Repeat this procedures 2 or 3 times.
