Ignition Timing: Adjustments
PROCEDURENOTE: This Ignition system controls timing and spark advance electronically and allows no provisions for adjustment. The following procedure is for inspection only. If a problem is found refer to individual component testing.
1. Connect the test probe of a tachometer to terminal IG (-) of the Data Link Connector 1.
CAUTION: NEVER allow the tachometer terminal to touch ground as it could result in damage to the Igniter and/or Ignition Coil. As some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system. we recommend that you confirm the compatibility of yours before use.
- After engine speed is kept at 1,000 - 1,300 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.
Idle Speed: 700 ± 50 rpm
2. Check the ignition timing.
- Using a 5mm hex wrench, remove the 2 cap nuts and V-bank cover.
Ignition Timing Connector:
- Using jumper, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the Data Link Connector 1 (SST 09843-18020).
- Connect a timing light to the green lead wire for the No. 4 Ignition Coil.
NOTE: Use a timing light that will the detect primary signal.
Ignition timing: 10° ± 2° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position)
- Remove the Jumper from Data Link Connector 1.
3. Further check ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 7° to 17° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position)
