With Generic Scan Tool
In compliance with SAE J1978, this vehicle conforms to OBDII diagnostic standards. Data Trouble Codes cannot be extracted without the use of an ODBII scan tool.
To display and read Diagnostic Trouble codes in Normal Mode:
1. Initial conditions.
- Battery positive voltage 11 volts or more.
- Throttle valve fully closed.
- Transmission in park or neutral position.
- Air conditioning switched OFF.
2. Turn ignition switch OFF.
3. Prepare the OBDII scan tool or LEXUS hand-held tester.
4. Connect the OBDII scan tool or LEXUS hand-held tester to data link connector 3 in the fuse box at the lower left of the instrument panel.
5. Turn the ignition switch ON and switch the OBDII scan tool or LEXUS hand-held tester ON.
6. Use the OBDII scan tool or LEXUS hand-held tester to check the diagnostic trouble codes and freezed frame data and note them down. For operating instructions, see the OBDII scan tool or LEXUS hand-held tester's instruction book.
To display and read Diagnostic Trouble codes in Check Mode:
NOTE: Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes in Check Mode may not be possible with all OBDII scan tools. The following procedure applies to the LEXUS hand-held tester and may or may not apply to other testers.
1. Initial conditions.
- Battery positive voltage 11 volts or more.
- Throttle valve fully closed.
- Transmission in park or neutral position.
- Air conditioning switched OFF.
2. Turn ignition switch OFF.
3. Prepare the LEXUS hand-held tester.
4. Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester to data link connector 3 in the fuse box at the lower left of the instrument panel.
5. Turn the ignition switch ON and switch the LEXUS hand-held tester ON.
6. Switch the LEXUS hand-held tester from normal mode to check mode. (Check that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) flashes.)
NOTE: If the LEXUS hand-held tester switches the Engine Control Module (ECM) from normal mode to check mode or vice-versa, or if the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or OFF during testing, the Diagnostic trouble codes and freezed frame data will be erased. Be sure to note down any needed data before switching modes.
7. Start the engine. (Check that the MIL goes out after engine starts.)
8. Simulate the conditions of the malfunction described by the customer.
NOTE: Leave the ignition switch ON until you have checked the diagnostic trouble codes. Turning the ignition switch OFF switches the diagnosis system from check mode to normal mode, so all diagnostic codes and freezed frame data is erased.
9. After simulating the malfunction conditions, use the LEXUS hand-held tester diagnosis selector to check the diagnostic trouble codes and freeze frame data. For operating instructions, see the LEXUS hand-held tester's instruction book.
