Removal












1. Remove engine under cover.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables from throttle body.
4. Remove air cleaner duct.
5. Remove air cleaner, Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter and intake air connector pipe assembly, refer to Powertrain Management.
6. Remove drive belt, fan, fluid coupling assembly and water pump pulley.
7. Remove no. 2 front exhaust pipe, refer to Exhaust System.
8. Remove exhaust manifolds, refer to Exhaust System.




9. Remove AIR hose.
10. Remove Vacuum Solenoid Valve (VSV) For EGR as follows:
(a) Disconnect the 2 vacuum hoses.
(b) Remove the nut and VSV.
11. Remove throttle body bracket and throttle body, refer to Powertrain Management.






12. Disconnect engine wire and heater water valve from cowl panel as follows:
(a) Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire protector and ground strap.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the heater water valve.
(c) Pull out the engine wire protector and heater water hose from the cowl panel.






13. Remove EGR pipe as follows:
(a) Loosen the union nut of the EGR pipe.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts, EGR pipe and gasket.
14. Remove EGR gas temperature sensor.






15. Remove EGR valve and vacuum modulator assembly as follows:
(a) Remove the bolt holding the vacuum modulator bracket to the intake air connector.
(b) Disconnect the 3 vacuum hoses from the No.1 vacuum pipe.
(c) Remove the 2 nuts, the EGR valve, vacuum modulator assembly and gasket.






16. Remove PCV hose.
17. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose.
18. Remove no. 2 vacuum pipe and VSV assembly as follows:
(a) Disconnect the 4 vacuum hoses from the No.2 vacuum pipe.
(b) Disconnect the vacuum hose from the air intake chamber.
(c) Disconnect the EGR gas temperature sensor connector from the claw of the No.2 vacuum pipe.






(d) Disconnect the VSV connector for the EVAP.
(e) Disconnect the 2 vacuum hoses from the vacuum control valve set.
(f) Remove the 2 nuts and No.2 vacuum pipe.






19. Remove intake air connector as follows:
(a) Remove the 4 bolts and 2 nuts holding the intake air connector to the air intake chamber.
(b) Disconnect the vacuum hose (from the actuator) from the No.1 vacuum pipe.
(c) Remove the intake air connector and gasket.
(d) Disconnect the vacuum hose from the intake air port.
(e) Remove the 3 bolts and No.1 vacuum pipe from the intake air connector.
20. Disconnect high-tension wires from cylinder head covers.
21. Remove distributor and high-tension wires assembly, refer to Powertrain Management.
22. Remove spark plugs.
23. Remove water bypass outlet and no. 1 water bypass pipe, refer to Water Pump in Cooling System.
24. Remove Timing Belt from camshaft timing pulleys.






25. Remove Diagnostic Link Connector 1 (DLC) 1 bracket and VSV assembly as follows:
(a) Disconnect the DLC1 from the bracket.
(b) Disconnect the VSV connector.
(c) Disconnect these hoses:
- PS air hose from air intake chamber
- Vacuum sensing hose from fuel pressure regulator
- Vacuum hose from air intake chamber
(d) Remove the bolt, DLC1 bracket and VSV assembly.






26. Remove air intake chamber as follows:
(a) Remove the bolt, nut and intake chamber stay. Remove the No.1 and No.2 stays.






(b) Remove the union bolt, brake booster union and 2 gaskets.
(c) Remove the 2 bolts, accelerator cable bracket and hose clamp.
(d) Remove the 5 bolts, nut, air intake chamber and gasket.






27. Disconnect fuel return hose.
28. Remove the 2 power steering pump bolts and rear stay.
29. Remove intake manifold stay as follows:
(a) Remove the bolt and hose clamp.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and manifold stay.






30. Remove oil dipstick mounting bolts, then pull guides from engine and transmission.






31. Disconnect the VSV connector, then remove vacuum control valve set.
32. Disconnect engine wiring as follows:






(a) Disconnect the wire clamp from the bracket.
(b) Disconnect these connectors:
- Heated oxygen sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) connector.
- Crankshaft position sensor connector.




(c) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the 2 ground straps from the intake manifold.
(d) Remove the bolt, and disconnect the wire clamp from the intake manifold.
(e) Disconnect these connectors:
- ECT sensor connector.
- ECT sender gauge connector.
- 2 knock sensor connectors.
- Oil pressure switch connector.
- Oil level sensor connector.
- A/C compressor connector.
- 6 injector connectors.






(f)Remove the 3 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire protector from the intake manifold.






33. Remove water outlet with no. 1 water bypass hose as follows:
(a) Disconnect the water bypass hose from the clamp on the oil filter bracket.
(b) Remove the 2 nuts, bolt and water outlet.






34. Remove fuel pressure pulsation damper, refer to Powertrain Management.
35. Remove fuel pipes as follows:
(a) Remove the 2 clamp bolt from the intake manifold.
(b) Remove the 2 union bolts and 4 gaskets, and disconnect the fuel inlet pipe and fuel return pipe.

NOTE:
- Put a suitable container or shop rag under the delivery pipe.
- Slowly loosen the union bolt.

36. Remove delivery pipe and injectors, refer to powertrain Management.






37. Remove the 6 intake manifold bolts and 2 nuts, then the manifold and gasket.






38. Remove NO. 3, NO. 1 and NO. 2 Cylinder head covers as follows:
(a) Remove the PCV valve.
(b) Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and No.3 cylinder head cover.
(c) Remove the 4 bolts, No.1 cylinder head cover and gasket.
(d) Remove the 4 bolts, No.2 cylinder head cover and gasket.






39. Hold the hexagon portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and remove the pulley mounting bolt and camshaft pulley.
40. Remove no. 4 timing belt cover.






41. Remove camshafts as follows:
(a) Uniformly loosen and remove the four No.1 bearing cap bolts.
(b) Using a screwdriver, pry out the two No.1 camshaft bearing caps and oil seals.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the cap. Tape the screwdriver tip.






(c) Uniformly loosen and remove the 12 bearing cap bolts, in several passes, in the sequence shown.
(d) Remove the 6 bearing caps and camshaft. Remove the intake and exhaust camshafts.






42. Remove cylinder head as follows:
(a) Using a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench, uniformly loosen and remove the 14 cylinder head bolts, in several passes, in the sequence shown.

CAUTION: Unless above procedure is followed, cylinder head warpage or cracking could result.

(b) Remove the 14 plate washers.
(c) Lift the cylinder head from the dowels on the cylinder block.
(d) Place the head on wooden blocks on a bench.







NOTE: If the cylinder head is difficult to lift off, pry with a suitable screwdriver between the cylinder head and block projection.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head and cylinder block.
