Connect Engine and Transmission






1. Check torque converter clutch installation as follows:



(a) Using calipers and straight edge, measure from the installed surface of the torque converter clutch to the front surface of the transmission.
Correct distance: less than 0.1 mm (0.004 inch).
(b) If the distance is not as specified, check for an improper installation.

2. Assembly engine and transmission as follows:
(a) Align the 2 knock pins on the cylinder block with the pin holes of the converter housing.
(b) Install bolts hand tight.
(c) Install the transmission with the 9 bolts, then tighten to:
Bolts with 14 mm head: 39 Nm (400 kg.cm, 29 ft.lb).
Bolts with 17 mm head: 72 Nm (730 kg.cm, 43 ft.lb).

3. Install torque converter clutch mounting bolts as follows:



(a) First, install the gray bolt, then install 5 black bolts while turning the crankshaft to gain access.
(b) Tighten the bolts evenly to 33 Nm (340 kg.cm, 25 ft.lb).
(c) Install the hole plug.

4. Install A/T oil cooler pipes for transmission as follows:
(a) Install the 2 oil cooler pipes with the 2 brackets and 3 bolts hand tight.
(b) Connect the 2 oil cooler pipes to the unions on the transmission, then tighten the union nuts to 34 Nm (350 kg.cm, 25 ft.lb).
(c) Tighten the 3 clamp bolts to 10 Nm (100 kg.cm, 7 ft.lb).

5. Install starter as follows:



(a) Install the starter and wire bracket with the 2 bolts, tighten to 39 Nm (400 kg.cm, 29 ft.lb).
(b) Connect the starter connector.

6. Connect engine wire to transmission as follows:
(a) Connect the connectors.
(b) Install the wire clamps to the brackets.

7. Install oil dipstick guide and dipstick for transmission as follows:



(a) Install a new O-ring to the dipstick guide.
(b) Apply soapy water to the O-ring.
(c) Push in the dipstick guide end to the dipstick tube of the oil pan.
(d) Install the dipstick guide with the bolt.
(e) Install the dipstick.
