Rear





REAR AXLE CARRIER REMOVAL
1. Remove the rear wheel.

NOTE: When installing the front wheel, tighten it to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).

2. Disconnect the exhaust pipe.

NOTE: Support the exhaust pipe securely.

3. Remove the rear brake caliper and the disc after doing these procedures.
a. Remove the two bolts and the brake caliper from the rear axle hub.

NOTE: When installing the caliper, tighten the bolts to 104 Nm (77 ft. lbs.).

b. Support the brake caliper securely.
c. Place matchmarks on the disc and axle hub.
d. Remove the disc.

4. Check the bearing backlash and the axle hub deviation by performing these procedures.





a. Use a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction. The maximum backlash is 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). If the backlash exceeds the specified maximum, replace the bearing.
b. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt. The maximum deviation is 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). If the measurement exceeds the specified maximum, replace the axle hub.

5. Remove the drive shaft lock nut and do the following.
a. Install the disc and brake caliper.
b. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
c. While applying the brakes, remove the nut.

NOTE: When installing the nut, tighten it to 289 Nm (213 ft. lbs.).

6. Remove the drive shaft, after removing the brake caliper and the disc.
7. Remove the parking brake shoe.
8. Remove the bolt and the ABS speed sensor.

NOTE: When installing the sensor, tighten it to 7.8 Nm (69 inch lbs.).

9. Remove the parking brake cable, doing the following.





a. Remove the four bolts.

NOTE: When installing the cable, tighten as follows.

^ Backing plate x Axle carrier: 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).

^ Parking brake cable x Axle carrier: 7.8 Nm (69 inch lbs.)

b. Remove the shoe guide plate set bolt.

NOTE: When installing the bolt, tighten it to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).


c. Using a 14 mm hexagon wrench, remove the hexagon bolt.

NOTE: When installing the bolt, tighten it to 180 Nm (132 ft. lbs.).

d. Slide the backing plate to the outside and disconnect the parking brake cable.

10. Disconnect the strut rod and the lower suspension arms.
11. Remove the rear axle carrier, after doing the following.
a. Remove the nut.

NOTE: When installing the nut, tighten it to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).





b. Using the 09610 - 20012 SST, disconnect the upper suspension arm and remove rear axle carrier.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the dust boot.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Using a screwdriver, remove the dust deflector.
2. Remove the axle hub from the axle carrier, and do the following.
a. Mount the axle carrier in a vise.

NOTE:
^ Use a set of soft jaws in the vise to protect the axle carrier.

^ Do not tighten the vise too tight.





b. Using the 09520 - 00031 SST, remove the axle hub.
c. Remove the backing plate.





d. Using the 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00420), 09950-40010 SST, remove the outside inner race from the axle hub.





3. Using the 09308 - 00010 SST, remove the oil seals.

4. Remove the bearing by doing these steps.
a. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
b. Temporarily install the inner race (inside) to the bearing.





c. Using the 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00640), 09950-70010 (09951 -07150) SST and a press, remove the bearing.

ASSEMBLY
1. Install the bearing, doing the following.





a. Using the 09527 - 17011, 09608 - 32010 SST and a press, install the bearing to the axle carrier.

NOTE: If the inner races come loose from the bearing outer race, be sure to install them on the same side as before.

b. Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring.

2. Install the (Outer) oil seal by doing the following.
a. Install the inner race (outside).





b. Using the 09608 - 32010 SST and a hammer, install a new oil seal.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the oil seal.

c. Coat MP grease onto the oil seal lip.

3. Install the axle hub, doing the following.
a. Temporarily install the backing plate.
b. Install the inner race (inside).





c. Using the 09608 - 32010, 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00640), 09950-70010 (09951 -07150) SST and a press, install the axle hub.

4. Install the (Inner) oil seal, doing the following.





a. Using the SST and a hammer, install a new oil seal.
b. Coat MP grease to the oil seal lip.





5. Using the 09950 - 60020 (09951 - 01030), 09950 - 70010 (09951 - 07150) SST and a press, install a new dust deflector.

NOTE: Align the holes for the ABS speed sensor in the dust deflector and carrier.

INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- check the ABS speed sensor signal
- check the rear wheel alignment
