Steering Column: Service and Repair








REMOVAL
1. Remove the steering wheel pad after doing these procedures.

NOTE:
^ If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.

^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Using a screwdriver, remove the No.2 and No.3 steering column wheel lower covers.

NOTE: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

c. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the two torx screws.





NOTE: Loosen the two screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





d. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.

^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.

NOTE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.



2. Remove the steering wheel after doing the following.
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the wheel set nut.





c. Place matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft.
d. Using the 09950 - 50010 (09951 - 05010, 09952 - 05010, 09953 - 05020, 09954 - 05020) SST, remove the wheel.

3. Remove the upper and the lower column covers after first removing the four screws.
4. Remove the cluster finish panel
5. Remove the No.1 under cover after first doing the following.
a. Remove the three screws.
b. Disconnect the DLC 2.
c. Remove the two screws and disconnect the DLC 3.

6. Remove the finish plate and the end pad.
7. Remove the outside rear view mirror switch assembly after first disconnecting the connectors.
8. Remove the lower pad after completing these procedures.
a. Disconnect the hood lock release lever from the pad.
b. Remove the four pad set bolts and the pad set screw.

9. Remove the heater to register duct No.2 after removing the screw.
10. Remove the combination switch with spiral cable by doing the following.
a. Disconnect the airbag connector and connectors.
b. Remove the four screws.

11. Remove the spiral cable.

NOTE: Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.

12. Disconnect the sliding yoke by doing the following.





a. Place matchmarks on the control valve shaft and sliding yoke.
b. Loosen bolt B and remove bolt A.

13. Remove the sliding yoke after removing the bolt B.
14. Remove the steering column assembly after doing the following.
a. Remove the brake pedal return spring.





b. Loosen the hole cover clamp.
c. Disconnect the connectors.
d. Remove the four column assembly set nuts and column assembly.

DISASSEMBLY

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. Remove the intermediate no.2 shaft and the intermediate shaft stopper by doing these procedures.
a. Remove the bolt.
b. Shift the No.2 shaft.





c. Place matchmarks on the No.2 shaft and main shaft.

2. Remove the lower dust cover
3. Remove the column upper bracket by following these steps.
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the two tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 4 - 5 mm (0.16 - 0.20 inch) drill, drill into the two bolts.





c. Using a screw extractor, remove the two bolts.

4. Remove the screw and the tilt position sensor from the tilt steering gear assembly with motor.

INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT





1. Inspect the steering lock operation and check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
2. If necessary, replace the key cylinder by doing the following.





a. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the key cylinder.
c. Install a new key cylinder.

NOTE: Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.

3. Inspect the ignition switch.
4. Inspect the key unlock warning switch.
5. Inspect the key interlock solenoid.
6. if necessary, replace the ignition switch with the key unlock warning switch and the key interlock solenoid by following these steps.
a. Remove the five screws.
b. Install a new switch assembly with the five screws.

STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. Install the tilt position sensor by tightening the screw.

NOTE: Tighten the ground wire with the screw.





2. Install the column upper bracket and tighten the two tapered-head bolts until the bolt head breaks off.
3. Install the lower dust cover.
4. Install the intermediate shaft stopper and the intermediate No.2 shaft by doing these steps.
a. Align the matchmarks on the No.2 shaft and main shaft.
b. Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

INSTALLATION
1. Install the steering column assembly, doing the following.
a. Tighten the four column assembly set nuts to 25 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
b. Connect the connectors.
c. Tighten the hole cover clamp.
d. Install the brake pedal return spring.

2. Install the sliding yoke and temporarily tighten the bolt B.
3. Connect the sliding yoke by doing these steps.





a. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
b. Tighten the A bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
c. Tighten the B bolt 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

4. Install the spiral cable.
5. Install the combination switch with spiral cable and do the following.
a. Tighten the four screws.
b. Connect the airbag connector and connectors.

6. Install the heater to register duct No.2, then tighten the screw.
7. Install the lower pad after doing these steps.
a. Torque the four pad set bolts and the pad set screw.
b. Connect the hood lock release lever.

8. Install the outside rear view mirror switch assembly, then connect the connectors.
9. Install the end pad and finish plate.
10. Install the under cover No.1 and do the following.
a. Install the DLC 3 with two screws.
b. Connect the DLC 2.
c. Tighten the three screws.

11. Install the cluster finish panel.
12. Install the upper and lower column covers and then tighten the four screws.
13. Center the spiral cable by doing these steps.
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.





c. Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 3 turns align the red mark.

NOTE: The spiral cable will rotate about three turns to either left or right of the center.

14. Install the steering wheel by doing the following.
a. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft
b. Tighten the wheel set nut to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
c. Connect the connector.

15. Install the steering wheel pad by following these procedures.

NOTE:
^ Make sure that the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.

^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.

^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and is not pinched between other parts.

a. Connect the airbag connector.





b. Install the pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, tighten the two screws to 8.8 Nm (78 inch lbs.).
16. Check the steering wheel center point.
