Carrier Side Gears: Service and Repair
1. Drain the differential oil.2. Disconnect the exhaust pipe.
NOTE: Support the exhaust pipe securely.
3. Remove the rear drive shaft.
4. Remove the side gear shaft after doing the following.
a. Using the 09520 - 24010 Special Service Tool (SST) and two bolts, remove the side gear shaft.
b. Remove the snap ring from the side gear shaft.
5. Using the 09308 - 00010 SST, remove the side gear shaft oil seal.
6. Install the side gear shaft oil seal by following these steps.
a. Using the 09608 - 32010, 09950 - 70010 (09951 - 07150) SST and a hammer, install a new oil seal.
b. Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.
7. Install the side gear shaft, doing the following.
a. Install a new snap ring to the side gear shaft.
b. Using a brass bar and hammer, install the side gear shaft to the differential.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the side sear shaft and oil seal.
8. Check the installation of the side gear shaft by following these procedures.
a. Check that there is 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 inch) of play in the axial direction.
b. Check that the side gear shaft will not come out by trying to pull it out by hand.
9. Install the rear drive shaft.
10. Connect the exhaust pipe.
11. Check the differential oil level and fill with differential oil if necessary. The oil grade should be Hypoid gear oil API GL-5. The oil viscosities are as follows.
- Above-18 °C (O°F): SAE 90
- Below-18°C (O°F): SAE 80W-90 or 80W.
NOTE: The oil capacity is 1.35 liters (1.43 US qts.).
