Disassembly

NOTE: When fastening the differential carrier to an overhaul stand etc., fasten it at the four places on the ring gear side shown in the illustration.





1. Remove the side gear shafts by doing the following.

a. Using the 09520 - 24010 Special Service Tool (SST), remove the two side gear shafts.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the oil seal.

b. Using a screwdriver, remove the two snap rings from the side gear shafts.

2. Using the 09308 - 00010 SST, remove the side gear shaft oil seals.
3. Remove the differential carrier retainers by doing the following.
a. Remove the 16 bolts.

b. Using the 09950- 40010, 09950-60010(09951- 00450) SST, remove the two carrier retainers and washers.





4. Remove the differential case by taking the differential case out of the carrier while lifting the ring gear side, as shown in the illustration.
5. Using a screwdriver, remove the two O-rings from the differential carrier retainers.

6. Using the 09950 - 60020 (09951 - 00710), 09950-70010 (09951 -07150) SST and a press, remove the two side bearing outer races and adjusting plate washers.
7. Remove the drive pinion, spacer and the companion flange by following these steps.
a. Using a chisel and hammer, loosen the staked part of the nut.





b. Using the 09229 - 55010, 09330 - 00021 SST, remove the nut.





c. Using a press, remove the drive pinion with the rear bearing and remove the companion flange.

NOTE: Be careful not to drop the drive pinion.

d. Remove the spacer from the drive pinion.

8. Using the 09308 - 00010 SST, remove the oil seal.
9. Remove the oil slinger and the front bearing.





10. Using the 09950 - 00020 SST and a press, remove the rear bearing from the drive pinion.
11. Remove the front and rear bearing outer races and the adjusting plate washer.

NOTE:
- Do not remove the outer race except where replacing the bearings.





- Using a brass bar and hammer, remove the two outer races and washer from the differential carrier.

- Measure the washer and note the thickness for reassembly.





12. Using the 09950 - 40010, 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00450) SST, remove the 2 side bearings from the differential case.
13. Remove the ring gear after doing the following.





a. Place matchmarks on the ring gear and differential case.
b. Remove the 10 ring gear set bolts.
c. Using a plastic hammer, tap on the ring gear to separate it from the differential case.

14. Disassemble the differential case, doing the following.





a. Using a pin punch and hammer, remove the straight pin.
b. Remove these parts from the differential case, the pinion shaft, the two pinion gears, two pinion gears thrust washers, two side gears and the two side gears thrust washers.
