Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair









OVERHAUL

NOTICE:
^ When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
^ When installing the parts indicated by arrows, coat them with power steering fluid.

1. DRAIN POWER STEERING FLUID
2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
a. Remove the 16 screws and under cover.
3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER REAR RH
a. Remove the 2 bolts and under cover.
4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER INLET NO. 1
a. Remove the bolt and air cleaner inlet No. 1.
5. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the MAF meter connector.
b. Remove the clamp.
c. Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner.





6. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
a. Set a wrench on the drive belt tensioner set bolt.
b. Turn the drive belt tensioner set bolt counterclockwise and hold it.

HINT: The drive belt tensioner set bolt has a left-hand thread. The drive belt tensioner set bolt loosens when it is turned clockwise.

c. Remove the fan and generator V belt.
d. Release the drive belt tensioner.
7. REMOVE VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the return hose, 2 vacuum hoses and 3 clips.
b. Remove the pressure feed hose union bolt, pressure feed tube and gasket.
c. Remove the 2 bolts, nut and vane pump.





8. MEASURE VANE PUMP ROTATION TORQUE
a. Check that the pump rotates smoothly without abnormal noise.
b. Using a torque wrench, check the pump rotation torque.
Rotation torque: 0.25 Nm (2.5 kgf-cm, 2.2 inch lbs.) or less





9. REMOVE VANE PUMP PULLEY
a. Using SST to stop the pulley from rotating, remove the pulley set nut.
SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000)





10. REMOVE AIR CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the air control valve.
b. If necessary, replace the union seat.
1. Using a screw extractor, remove the union seat.





2. Using an extension bar and hammer, tap in a new union seat.

NOTICE: Before installing the union seat, remove foreign matter sticking to the vane pump housing.

11. REMOVE POWER STEERING SUCTION PORT UNION
a. Remove the 2 bolts and power steering suction port union.
b. Using a small screwdriver, remove the O-ring from the power steering suction port union.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the suction port union.





12. REMOVE POWER STEERING SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the power steering solenoid valve.
SST 09922-10010

NOTICE: Rotate SST in the direction shown in the illustration.

b. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the vane pump housing front.





c. Temporarily install a bolt to the flow control spring seat and pull it out together with the flow control spring seat.

HINT: Use a bolt with a diameter of 6 mm (0.24 inch) and pitch of 1.0 mm (0.039 inch).

d. Remove the O-ring from the flow control spring seat.





13. REMOVE VANE PUMP SHAFT
a. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the vane pump housing.
b. Temporarily install an appropriate plate washer and the pulley set nut to the vane pump shaft.
c. Using SST, pull out the vane pump shaft.
SST 09910-00015 (09911-00011, 09912-00010)
d. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the vane pump shaft.
14. REMOVE VANE PUMP BRACKET REAR
a. Remove the 4 bolts and vane pump bracket.
b. Remove the O-ring from the vane pump bracket.





c. Remove the wave washer.
d. Using an extension bar and press, press out the vane pump side plate front, vane pump cam ring, vane pump rotor, vane pump plates and vane pump side plate rear as an assembly.
e. Using pliers, remove the long cam ring straight pin from the vane pump housing front.
f. Remove the O-ring from the vane pump side plate rear.

NOTICE: Take care not to drop the vane plate.

g. Remove the vane pump rotor and the 10 vane pump plates from the vane pump cam ring.
h. Remove the 10 vane pump plates from the vane pump rotor.
i. Remove the short cam ring straight pin from the vane pump side plate front.
j. Remove the 2 O-rings from the vane pump side plate front.





15. REMOVE VANE PUMP HOUSING OIL SEAL
a. Using SST, tap out the oil seal.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the vane pump housing front.





16. INSPECT OIL CLEARANCE
a. Using a micrometer and caliper gauge, measure the oil clearance.
Standard clearance: 0.03 to 0.045 mm (0.0012 to 0.0018 inch)
Maximum clearance: 0.07 mm (0.028 inch)
If the clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the vane pump housing front and vane pump shaft.





17. INSPECT VANE PUMP ROTOR AND VANE PUMP PLATE
a. Using a micrometer, measure the height, thickness and length of the 10 vane pump plates.





Minimum





b. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the rotor groove and plate.
Maximum oil clearance: 0.028 mm (0.0011 inch)
If the oil clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the vane pump assembly.





18. INSPECT FLOW CONTROL VALVE
a. Coat the valve with power steering fluid and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.
If not as specified, replace the vane pump assembly.





b. Check the flow control valve for leakage.
Close either hole A or B and apply 392 to 490 kPa (4 to 5 kgf/cm2, 57 to 71 psi) of compressed air into the opposite side. Confirm that air does not come out from the end hole C.
If air leaks from hole C, replace the vane pump.





19. INSPECT FLOW CONTROL VALVE COMPRESSION SPRING
a. Using a vernier caliper, measure the uncompressed length of the spring.
Minimum uncompressed length: 36.9 mm (1.45 inch)
If the length is less than the minimum, replace the spring.





20. INSTALL VANE PUMP HOUSING OIL SEAL
a. Apply power steering fluid to the new vane pump housing oil seal lip.
b. Using SST and a press, press in the oil seal.
SST 09950-60010 (09951-00180, 09951-00300, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)

NOTICE:
^ Make sure that the oil seal is installed facing the correct direction.
^ Be careful not to damage the oil seal.





21. INSTALL VANE PUMP SHAFT
a. Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring to the vane pump shaft.
b. Coat the vane pump shaft with power steering fluid.
c. Using SST, press in the vane pump shaft with the bearing.

d. Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring to the vane pump housing.
22. INSTALL VANE PUMP BRACKET REAR
a. Coat a new long cam ring straight pin with power steering fluid and install it to the vane pump housing.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the cam ring straight pin.

b. Coat 2 new O-rings with power steering fluid and install them to the vane pump side plate front.
c. Coat the vane pump side plate front with power steering fluid.





d. Using SST, press in the vane pump side plate front.

NOTICE:
^ Make sure that the vane pump side plate front is installed facing the correct direction.
^ Be careful not to damage the O-ring.

HINT: Align the wide hole of the vane pump side plate front and long cam ring straight pin.

e. Coat a new short cam ring straight pin with power steering fluid and install it to the vane pump side plate front.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the short cam ring straight pin.





f. Coat the vane pump cam ring with power steering fluid.
g. Align the wide hole of the vane pump cam ring and long cam ring straight pin, and install the vane pump cam ring with the inscribed mark facing outward.
h. Coat the vane pump rotor with power steering fluid.
i. Install the vane pump rotor with the inscribed mark facing outward.





j. Coat the 10 vane pump plates with power steering fluid.
k. Install the 10 vane pump plates with the round end facing outward.





l. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it to the vane pump side plate rear.
m. Coat the vane pump side plate rear with power steering fluid.
n. Using a press, press in the vane pump side plate rear.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the O-ring.

HINT: Align the wide hole of the vane pump side plate rear and long cam ring straight pin.





o. Install the wave washer so that its protrusions fit into the slots in the vane pump side plate rear.
p. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it to the vane pump bracket.
q. Install the vane pump bracket to the front housing with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)
23. INSTALL POWER STEERING SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY
a. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it to the flow control spring seat.
b. Install the flow control spring seat with the bolt hole facing outward.
c. Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring.
d. Coat the flow control valve compression spring with power steering fluid and install it to the vane pump housing.
e. Install the flow control valve, making sure it faces the correct direction.
f. Coat the power steering solenoid valve with power steering fluid.





g. Using SST, install the power steering solenoid valve.
SST 09922-10010
Torque: 51 Nm (520 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Rotate SST in the direction shown in the illustration.

HINT: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 345 mm (13.58 inch).

24. INSTALL POWER STEERING SUCTION PORT UNION
a. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it to the suction port union.
b. Install the suction port union to the vane pump with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
25. INSTALL AIR CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
Torque: 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)





26. INSTALL VANE PUMP PULLEY
a. Using SST to stop the vane pump pulley from rotating, torque the pulley set nut.
SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000)
Torque: 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)





27. MEASURE VANE PUMP ROTATION TORQUE
a. Check that the pump rotates smoothly without abnormal noise.
b. Using a torque wrench, check the pump rotation torque.
Rotation torque: 0.25 Nm (2.5 kgf-cm, 2.2 inch lbs.) or less
28. INSTALL VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY
a. Install the power steering vane pump with the nut.
Torque: 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the 2 bolts.
Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)





c. Install the pressure feed tube and a new gasket to the pressure feed hose union bolt.

HINT: Make sure the stopper of the pressure feed tube touches the power steering vane pump body as shown in the illustration, then torque the union bolt.

Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
d. Connect the return hose with the clip.
e. Connect the 2 vacuum hoses with the 2 clips.





29. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
a. Put a wrench on the drive belt tensioner set bolt.
b. Turn the drive belt tensioner set bolt counterclockwise and hold it.

HINT: The drive belt tensioner set bolt has a left-hand thread. The drive belt tensioner set bolt loosens when it is turned clockwise.





c. Install the fan and generator V belt.
d. Release the drive belt tensioner.

HINT: The drive belt tensioner is an auto tensioner.

30. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the air cleaner with the 3 bolts.
b. Install the clamp.
c. Connect the MAF meter connector.
31. INSTALL AIR CLEANER INLET NO. 1
a. Install the air cleaner inlet with the bolt.
32. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER REAR RH
a. Install the under cover with the 2 bolts.
33. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER
a. Install the under cover with the 16 bolts.
34. BLEED AIR FROM POWER STEERING SYSTEM
35. INSPECT FLUID LEAK
