Restraints - Air Bag Lamp ON/DTC's B1877/B1881

TSB: 08-001/07

2004-2005 MAZDA3 - AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT COMES ON WITH CODE B1877/B1881

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2004-2005 Mazda3 vehicles

DESCRIPTION

On some vehicles, the airbag warning light may come on with DTCs B1877 or B1881. If the seat slider is used a lot, the front seat connection becomes loose. When the connection gets loose, a load is applied to the connection between the pretensioner and rear harness causing the coating on the terminal to peel off and allowing the resistance to get higher.

^ B1877: Driver-side pre-tensioner front buckle circuit resistance high

^ B1881: Passenger-side pre-tensioner front buckle circuit resistance high

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Record the customer's radio presets.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Replace the front seat belt buckle pretensioner(s) with new one(s). Refer to Workshop Manual section 08-11 FRONT BUCKLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

^ If DTC B1877 is set, replace the driver's side front seat belt buckle pretensioner.

^ If DTC B1881 is set, replace the passenger's side front seat belt buckle pretensioner.

5. Disconnect both front seat connectors.

NOTE:
Even if the symptom only occurs on one side, perform steps 5 through 9 on both driver and passenger sides.

6. Remove the tie-wrap and electrical tape, then pull away 3 to 4 inches of the corrugate tube.

7. Wrap the wires using the following steps, making sure not to allow a gap.

a. Wrap some electrical tape over the wires and then fit a corrugated tube over the tape-wrapped wires.

b. Allow the electrical tape to come out from the opening of the corrugated tube and wrap the tape around the tube more than 5 times. Cut the tape about one inch out.

c. To prevent the wires and corrugated tube from coming out of position, secure the wires and corrugated tube with the uncut electrical tape.

8. Secure the harness to the plastic tab of the connector by wrapping electrical tape around both for three or more turns. Cut the electrical tape about an inch out and wrap the unused tape around the harness.

NOTE:
After wrapping the tape, verify the wiring doesn't move.

9. Using a tie-wrap, secure the plastic tab of the connector and the harness.

10. Connect the front seat connectors.

11. Connect the negative battery cable.

12. If the passenger seat was removed, perform the Seat Weight Sensor Calibration. Refer to Workshop Manual section 08-10 SEAT WEIGHT SENSOR CALIBRATION.

13. Verify repair.

14. Enter the customer's radio presets.
