DESCRIPTION
On some vehicles, customers may report irregular bass operation from the audio unit where it is amplified abnormally or cuts out, regardless of the ALC (ON/OFF) or BASS setting. Concern may be most noticeable when volume level is set to 35 or more.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedures.
VERIFICATION PROCEDURE
1. Verify vehicle is subject to concern by the following:
^ Vehicle is in subject VIN range.
^ With ignition switch in ACC or ON position and audio system on, check the software version of the audio system by pressing and holding AUDIO CONT knob and Preset 1 button. The software version is shown in the information display.
2. Determine software version of the audio system.
^ If the software version is updated, continue diagnosing the problem using the Workshop Manual.
^ If the software version is original, go to step 3.
3. Determine the Part Number of the audio unit.
^ If the software version is 1.00M3Su or 1.00D3Su, go to step 5.
^ If the software version is 1.00M3Cu, determine if the audio system has BOSE sound, then go to step 5.
There is a possibility of two different audio units with this software version - with and without BOSE sound.
With BOSE sound, "BOSE SOUND" will be displayed in the information display when the ignition is first turned on and BOSE will be indicated on the front door trim speaker cover.
^ If the software version is 1.00D3Cu, go to step 4. There is a possibility of two different audio units with this software version. The audio unit will need to be partially removed to determine the part number.
4. Verify audio unit part number:
a. Remove the decoration panel. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 09-17 DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
b. Loosen the two screws on the dashboard center panel. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 09-17 DASHBOARD CENTER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
c. Remove the two screws for the center panel (audio) unit.
d. Pull the center panel unit out enough to view the part number label.
e. Note the part number to order.
f. Reassemble in the reverse order.
5. Order the appropriate exchange part from the PARTS INFORMATION either by the software version or the part number of the audio unit.
^ In order to receive an exchange component, the dealer must complete and fax a Mazda Audio Exchange Order form, part number 9999-95-032J-R9 downloadable from MStore, to UNITED RADIO (Automotive Division). It can also be done online. The dealer must completely fill out each section of the Audio Exchange Order form that pertains to the unit being exchanged. An exchange unit will be shipped in a protective/reusable carton to the dealer within 24 hours or the next working day following the order.
^ After replacing the unit, please return the failed unit at your earliest convenience to keep the parts flow process moving for this service bulletin. Return the unit along with a copy of the completed Audio Exchange Order Form in the original reusable carton back to UNITED RADIO.
