Interior - Rattles From Under Driver's Seat

RATTLE NOISE FROM BOTTOM OF DRIVER SEAT

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2010 Mazda3 vehicles with VINS lower than JM1BL******382460 (produced before September 1, 2010)

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may exhibit rattle noise from driver seat slide adjuster which is located underneath the seat. This is caused by the welding of the slide adjuster being broken and/or the push nut is loose due to repeated usage. To improve the durability, the material of the slide adjuster has been changed.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Remove the driver seat from the vehicle. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 02-13 FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

NOTE:
Adjust the seat height to top and seat slide to rear end.

3. Look at the bottom side of the seat and check if there is any damage to the welding on the sub slide unit link (A) and/or the push nut (B) is loose or missing.

a. Check 2 sub slide unit links and 2 push nuts on the front side.

If push nut (B) is loose or missing, go to step 4.

If sub slide unit link (A) is damaged, go to step 5.





b. To remove the side covers (A and B), remove the screw and fastener (both sides).





c. Check 2 sub slide unit links and 2 push nuts on rear side.

If push nut (A) is loose or missing, go to step 4.

If sub slide unit link (B) is damaged, go to step 5.





4. To fix loose/missing push nut (A):





a. At each location, install new push nuts. If necessary, remove the old push nut at each location, then discard it and install two new pushnuts. Otherwise, just install one new push nut over the old push nut.

NOTE:
To install the push nut, use a 19mm socket (A) and then hit with a hammer from both sides with the assistance of another person. Adjust the clearance between the push nut and the slide adjuster from 0 to 0.3mm.





NOTE:
To install the side cover, insert the tab on the slide adjuster to the groove on the side cover, then fix with a screw and a nut.





Side cover installation - Insert the tab into the groove.





b. Install the driver seat back into the vehicle.

5. To fix the damage on sub slide unit link:

a. Remove the seat slide adjuster from the front seat as per Workshop Manual "FRONT SEAT (SIDE) COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION", "FRONT SEAT CUSHION TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION", "FRONT SEAT BACK COMPONENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION", and "FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION"

b. Remove four push nuts and nylon washers then discard them.

NOTE:
Insert flat head screwdriver (A) between the push nut and the adjuster link and hit with a hammer, then remove the push nut with pliers.





c. Remove the slide adjuster. The slide adjuster will be reused.





d. Drill the center of rivets by 5mm bit (A) and remove the rivets, then remove the seat pan. The seat pan will be reused.





e. Discard the removed sub slide unit.





f. Apply grease to the four points of the slide adjuster as shown.

NOTE:
Apply lithium grease thinly and evenly to the sliding area about 20mm from the edge of shaft hole.





g. Attach a new sub slide unit to the slide adjuster.

NOTE:
To install the push nut, use a 19mm socket (A) and then hit with a hammer from both sides with the assistance of another person. Adjust the clearance between the push nut and the slide adjuster from 0 to 0.3mm. then slide it to rear end.





Install one nylon washer (A) and two new push nuts (B) at four locations.





NOTE
To install the push nut, use a 19mm socket (A) and then hit with a hammer from both sides with the assistance of another person. Adjust the clearance between the push nut and the side adjuster from 0 to 0.3mm.





h. To align the position of the slide adjuster and the seat pan, temporarily fix the slide adjuster to the vehicle then slide it to rear end.





i. Fix the seat pan to the lifter link with four bolts and nuts.

Tightening torque: 2.5-3.5 Nm

NOTE:
Apply thread lock to the bolts.





j. Remove the slide adjuster from the vehicle.

k. Attach the slide adjuster to the seat, then install the seat back into the vehicle

6. Verify repair.
