GF82.61-P-3011GH Route Computation, Function
- with CODE (352a) COMAND operating and display system
- except CODE (491) U.S. version
- except CODE (498) Japanese version

After entry of the destination on the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) the route is calculated by the navigation computer and permanently updated. It can only be computed within the digitized map area.

The destination-finding system is contingent upon the route being calculated.

Route calculation
The navigation computer uses the CD-ROM map data to calculate the entered destination and the current position of the vehicle on the route. Its calculation also considers any roads and attributes given on the CD-ROM map, such as one-way streets, no turn signs, road categories,... (insofar as available). Here the user can specify in which manner the route is to be calculated:
- Quickest route
- Shortest route
- Dynamic route
- User selection

Dynamic route
In this function a traffic data recorder integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is used to help store the data transmitted by radio (FM/RDS or GSM network) and automatically considered in the route calculation.

The route is then calculated with the optimum time, in a similar manner to the 'Quickest route' option. Notification that the route has been recalculated taking traffic messages into consideration, is provided. The "Dynamic route" function is only currently available for highways.

In the event of " User selection", the following stretches can be blocked from the route calculation:
- HIGHWAY,
- FERRY,
- TOLL

Following the calculation of the route, the navigation processor generates a list of roads and junctions to be driven along. This route list is used for destination finding. It may also be displayed by calling up the "Info" menu.

Route updating
If the driver deviates from the calculated route, a new route list is calculated by the navigation processor. The current position and the direction of travel are taken into consideration, and the new route is optimized accordingly. The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) will display a " New Route" message and the instrument cluster (A1) will display a " NEW RTE" message.

Journeys outside of the digitized map area
If the vehicle leaves the digitized CD-ROM map area (e.g. entering a multi-level car park), then it is not possible to calculate or update the route. "OFF ROAD" then appears on the display. When leaving the map area (e.g. going abroad) " NO MAP" will be displayed.

Destinations located outside of the digitized map area cannot be taken into consideration in route calculation

Circumventing traffic jams with the "Detour" function
Following a traffic jam message via a traffic information radio channel, a route which circumvents the traffic jam can be calculated before the relevant stretch has been reached. In order to achieve this, the "Detour" button must be pressed, and either:
- the length of the traffic jam, including the distance to the start of the jam be entered, or
- the corresponding stretch should be blocked within the specified route list.

In contrast to the " Dynamic destination-finding system" the " Detour" function is also available both for Federal and country roads and in urban areas.
