Operation(the drawings here are meant to illustrate operational principles and are not vehicle-specific.)
1. The restraint systems control module (N2/7) delivers an electrical ignition pulse to either one or both of the inflator detonators (R12/13, R12/14), depending on the severity of the impact. The type of crash involved determines whether the detonators are ignited simultaneously or in stages.
2. The detonators then ignite the solid propellant in the inflator. When the solid propellant burns it generates a gas that flows explosively under high pressure through a filter and into the interior of the airbag folded compactly on top of the inflator.
3. The bag then inflates, forcing open the steering wheel hub cover along a special split line.
4. As more gas enters the bag, it pushes through the opening and fills to maximum volume.
5. The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 45 msec.
6. It begins to deflate immediately after attaining maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
As it is not possible to determine whether both detonators were ignited during deployment, proper airbag disposal is essential. In Germany airbag disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System, or "MeRSy".
In all other countries, please observe applicable regulations regarding the disposal of airbags.
