Windshield Damage During Removal of Inside Rearview Mirror

On the above models, when removing the inside rearview mirror, particular care must be taken not to damage the windshield during the procedure outlined in WIS document AR68.40-P-0001GI (Removing and Installing Inside Rearview Mirror). Due to excessive spring clip tension, windshield damage may occur, because of excessive force being applied during mirror removal. If you find that the mirror does not release from it's mount with only moderate force, follow the procedure below.

1. Remove trim cover on mirror base.

2. Remove Overhead Control Panel as per WIS document AR82.20-P-1100GH.

3. Looking through the opening in the headliner for the Overhead Control Panel, locate the spring clip on mirror base (Figure 1 and 2).

4. Place a plastic wedge (part no. 115 589 03 59 00) on the glass surface just above the spring clip, in order to protect the windshield during the following steps (Figure 2).

Note:
Failure to properly position the wedge may result in damage to the windshield.

5. Using a large flat blade screwdriver (approximately 5/16-inch tip width), place the blade between the top edge of the spring clip and the plastic wedge at the pry point (Figure 2).

6. Pry the spring clip downwards by rotating the screwdriver clockwise or counterclockwise, while simultaneously pushing the rearview mirror downwards, at the same angle as the windshield. The mirror will then slide off the metal base-plate, which is glued to the windshield.

7. Continue with step # 2 of WIS document AR68.40-P-0001GI, for the remainder of mirror removal and installation steps.
