Top coat, Tuscaloosa plant
Material:
Water-soluble base coat
Processing method:
Manual coating of doors, flaps and folds,
- Metallic finish: ESTA, pneumatic
- Solid finish: ESTA
Intermediate evaporation:
Purpose: to reduce the proportion of water in the paint to less than 10%
Temperature approx. 60 to 80 degrees C
Retention period in infrared dryer at least 1 min
Retention period in circulated air dryer at least 3.5 min
Retention period in cooling zone at least 1.5 min

Color scheme and metallic effect
Material:
2K clear varnish
Processing method:
Manual coating of doors, flaps and folds ESTA
Coat thickness:
Doors and door folds 35 to 45 micro m
Flaps 40 to 46 micro m
horizontal (automatic) 45 to 51 micro m
vertical (automatic) 40 to 46 micro m
Baking conditions:
The clear varnish is burned-in in a 4-zone furnace (182 degree C, 135 degree C, 130 degree C and 127 degree C) for 49 min. The object temperature is between 120 degrees C and 145 degrees C for 40 minutes.
Function:
- Increases luster and metallic effect.
- Protects the surface of the paint from the effects of the weather (sun, rain and acid rain).
- Protects the paint from stone chipping.
Top coat, Graz plant
Application of top coat
Prior to application of the top, or finish coat the bodies are cleaned at an "emu" station.
Water-based metallic paint
- Manual application: hood, inside of engine compartment, door frames, door folds, trunk lid, tailgate, and folds.
- Outer panels are painted with the automated ESTA equipment.
Non-metallic paint, water-based paint
Essentially the same procedure as for water-based metallic Intermediate drying for approx. 3 min. at 80 degree C.
2K clear coat:
- Manual application; door frames, door folds, trunk lid, inside of tailgate and folds.
- Outer skin using ESTA, Drying for 20 min. at 140 degree C.
The frame is painted manually:
Color: MB 7 164 (deep dark gray)
