Design of the dual-stage driver airbag
- The housing containing the driver's side airbag module is mounted in the center of the steering wheel by screws and has a padded cover facing the driver. The cover, inscribed with the Mercedes logo and the words "SRS AIRBAG," is pre-slit to allow the airbag to escape.

- The inflator, located within the housing, is outfitted with two non-azide solid-propellant charges and is linked to the folded airbag via a filter. The bag itself is made of a high-quality, tear-resistant woven nylon fabric.
For ignition, each solid-propellant charge is equipped with its own detonator.

- The electrical connection between the detonators in the revolving steering wheel and the restraint systems control module (N2/7) is provided by the airbag/horn clock spring (A45) and the vehicle's wiring harness.

- To prevent accidental deployment, the detonators are provided with shorting jumpers which automatically short-circuit the detonator terminals if the coupling is separated.
