GF82.60-P-2001GH Radio Operation, Function
- with CODE (352a) COMAND operating and display system
- except CODE (491) U.S. version
- except CODE (498) Japanese version

The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is activated via the " ON button".

The radio menu is activated by actuating the " FM/AM" button on the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3).

The rear window antenna (A2/32) receives the FM and AM high frequency signals. The music, voice and/or data signal is modulated upon these high-frequency signals. The radio antenna splitter (A2/5) decouples the AM signals from the rear window's heater current, and routes it to the FM/AM amplifier (A2/18) , while the FM signals are sent directly from the rear window to the antenna amplifier. The FM/AM amplifier (A2/18) filters the frequencies of the radio-wavebands from the received high-frequency signals, and amplifies them.

The amplified signals are then sent over a common coaxial cable ( FM, AM) to the radio tuner, which is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3).

The radio tuner demodulates the high-frequency signals, i.e. it separates the useful information (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible). The demodulated audio signals are amplified and converted into sound signals by the vehicle loudspeakers.

Two-receiver technology, function
After the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is switched on a second (integrated) radio receiver automatically generates a list of the received FM stations, which is constantly updated during operation. This list appears, sorted alphabetically, when the menu is called up.

"FM radio station list". The stations which are displayed can be activated via selection and confirmation.

The list of radio stations is only available when the RDS function is active.
If interference of reception occurs while driving, the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) attempts with the aid of the second receiver to tune in the selected station on an alternative frequency . If reception improves a switchover is made

Certain radio channel programs are subdivided into regional programs at certain transmission times. As COMAND, as described above, automatically switches to an alternative frequency for the radio station if reception becomes disturbed, this may also lead to a change in the regional program. If this is not desired, the " FM settings" menu can be used to activate or deactivate the "Regional program" entry.

Radio Data System (RDS), function
Many radio stations (FM) also broadcast alongside the radio programs additional, digital information such as station name, type of program (PTY) traffic message channel (e.g. pop, cultural) and detection.

This information is evaluated by the COMAND and displayed on the screen, where:
- an RDS station has been programmed and
- the RDS function is active.

The COMAND system's radio component additionally provides:
- a list of stations of the currently most powerful FM stations in the RDS mode
- an automatic memory for the most powerful stations for MW/ LW
- a program type selection (PTY, e.g. culture, sport, pop) for FM stations in RDS mode

Station selection options:
- manual station search
- automatic station search with scan function (all stations in a waveband are played for 8 s )
- station selection from memory ( 10 stations per waveband)
- station selection through frequency entry via numerical keyboard (e.g. 92.2 MHz)
- station selection from the FM station list
