iPod(R) INTEGRATION KIT INSTALLATION

WARNING
Do not disconnect the negative battery cable. Extensive reprogramming requirements will otherwise be necessary. Wiring harnesses will be auxiliary active. It is therefore necessary to exercise extreme caution while executing these installation instructions. Failure to do so could result in severe vehicle damage, personal injury, or death from auxiliary shock. Keep the ignition and radio powered OFF through the final test.

A. Preparing for the installation

1. Read these installation in their entirety before proceeding.
2. Unpack and compare the installation kit contents against the Parts Information list - Section G.
3. Place the operating guides and customer accessories in the glove box or appropriate stowage compartment.
4.Remove the cover on the right side, under the instrument panel.
^ Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P-1520GZ, "Remove/install cover below instrument panel (right)"
5. Remove the glove compartment.
Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P-1400GZ, "Remove/install glove compartment"

6. Remove the auxiliary outlet (Figure 1) from the left side of the glove compartment.

7. Remove the head unit.
^ Refer to WIS document AR82.60-P-7502GZ, "Remove/install radio"

8. Disconnect the auxiliary outlet connector (Figure 2) from the connector housing in back of the head unit.

9. Remove the auxiliary outlet cable from the instrument panel.

Note:
Return the auxiliary outlet cable to the customer.

10. Remove the partition (A, Figure 3) for the upper section of the glove compartment.

a. Remove the two T20 Torx screws (Arrows, Figure 3) securing the partition from the outer, top and bottom of the upper section of the glove compartment.

b. From inside the upper section of the glove compartment, apply enough pressure to the top and bottom to release the partition tabs (Figure 4) from the slots holding it in place.

11. Measure, mark, and cut out the notch in the glove compartment partition for the iPod(R) wiring harness.

^ (A, Figure 5) = 5 mm
^ (B, Figure 5) = 10 mm
^ (C, Figure 5) = 10 mm

B. Installing the iPod(R) wiring harness

1. Find the iPod(R) wiring harness (Figure 6) in the kit and identify the:

^ Rubber grommet (A, Figure 6)
^ Interface connector (B, Figure 6)
^ iPod(R) connector (C, Figure 6)

NOTICE!
Routing wiring harnesses over sharp edges, under components, or in a manner that causes stress or breakage, will result in damage.
Damaged wiring harnesses can cause component malfunction.
Route wiring harnesses with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.

2. From inside the glove compartment, feed the interface connector end (B, Figure 6) of the iPod wiring harness through the hole for the auxiliary outlet and insert the rubber grommet (A, Figure 6) into the hole (A, Figure 7).

3. Route the iPod(R) connector (C, Figure 6) to the right side of the upper section of the glove compartment (B, Figure 7).

4. Reinstall the glove compartment partition.

a. With the notch facing the bottom, rear of the upper section of the glove compartment, install the partition with the iPod(R) wiring harness inserted into the notch (Figure 8).

Note:
Be sure the two cables of the iPod(R) wiring harness are not twisted around one another.

NOTICE!
Routing wiring harnesses over sharp edges, under components, or in a manner that causes stress or breakage, will result in damage.

Damaged wiring harnesses can cause component malfunction.
Route wiring harnesses with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.

b. Insert the tabs (Figure 4) of the partition into the slots in the top and bottom of the upper section of the glove compartment.

c. Secure the partition with the two previously removed T20 Torx screws.Torx screws.

5. Secure the iPod(R) wiring harness along the back of the upper section of the glove compartment with three pieces of felt tape cut to fit.

Note:
Fit the iPod(R) wiring harness snugly in the left corner of the upper section of the glove compartment before taping.

6. Feed the interface connector end of the iPod(R) wiring harness through the right side opening under the instrument panel, behind the center console, and into the cavity for the head unit (Figure 10).

7. Reinstall the glove compartment.
^ Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P-1400GZ, "Remove/install glove compartment"

Notice!
Improper placement of the iPod(R) wiring harness can result in pinched cables.

Pinched cables can result in malfunctioning or inoperative components.
Do not pinch the iPod wiring harness when reinstalling the glove compartment.

8. Reinstall the cover on the right side, under the instrument panel.
Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P-1520GZ, "Remove/install cover below instrument panel (right)"

C. Installing the interface

1. Find the interface wiring harness (Figure 11) in the kit and identify the:

^ Head unit adapter connector (A, Figure 11)

^ Interface connector (B, Figure 11)

^ Head unit adapter plug (C, Figure 11)

2. Find the interface (Figure 12) in the kit and affix two of the four kit-included VeLCRO(R) pieces to its surface (Arrows, Figure 12).

3. Connect the interface connector (B, Figure 6) of the iPod(R) wiring harness to the interface (A, Figure 13).

4. Connect the interface connector (B, Figure 11) of the interface wiring harness to the interface (B, Figure 13) and lock the connector lock.

Affix the two remaining VeLCRO(R) pieces to the surface to the lower, right in the cavity for the head unit and mate the VeLCRO(R) pieces on the interface to them (Figure 14).

D. Installing the interface wiring harness

1. Remove the MOST connector (A, Figure 15) from the head unit connector housing (B, Figure 15).

NOTICE!
Improper handing of optical fibers can damage the fibers.

Damaged optical fibers can cause component malfunction.

Handle optical fibers with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.

2. Connect the MOST connector removed in step 1 to the head unit adapter connector (Figure 16) of the interface wiring harness.

3. Connect the head unit connector housing (A, Figure 17) removed from the back of the head unit to the head unit adapter plug (B, Figure 17) of the interface wiring harness and lock the connector lock.

4. Connect the head unit adapter connector of the interface wiring harness to the head unit (Figure 18).

5. Connect the iPod(R) connector to the iPod(R) in the upper, right section of the glove compartment (Figure 19).

E. Version coding the instrument cluster

1. Connect Star Diagnosis to the vehicle.

2. Set the instrument cluster to recognize presence of the iPod(R):
a. Vehicles with TELE AID: No coding is needed
b. Vehicles without TELE AID: Follow path:

Control units > Information and communication > Instrument cluster > Control unit adaptations > Customer specific settings > Select "iPod: Operation via multifunction steering wheel," press F3 > Change coding to "Possible", press F3 > F5: To save changes > F3: To transfer coding to the control unit 3.

3. Check the DTC memory of all installed components and the head unit. Investigate and identify any present DTCs. Once identified, correct the source of the DTCs and clear the DTC memory.

Note:
Powering up the newly installed system prior to version coding will set errors in the MOST ring configuration. Ignore these errors during the initial DTC check. If, after clearing the DTC memory, they return in the next step, a configuration error is present. Locate and correct the error.

4. Confirm no new DTCs are present in the MOST system group.

F. Final assembly and function testing

1. Verify correct operation of the iPod(R).

^ Per operator's manual

^ iPod(R) screen displays Mercedes-Benz logo with "OK" to Disconnect" message

^ Correct function of the multifunction steering buttons

2. Reinstall the head unit.

^ Refer to WIS document AR82.60-P-7502GZ, "Remove/install radio"
