GF82.10-P-3080GZ Substitute Lights And Emergency Lights Actuation, Function
Function sequence for substitute lamp actuation
If specific lights malfunction, then others are actuated as substitutes, if necessary by pulse width modulation (to adapt the light output). In such an instance, flashing functions have priority over steady light.
The scope of the substitute lamp actuation depends on the national version and is coded in the central gateway control unit (N93) as follows.
^ Minimum variant (limited substitute lights permissible)
^ Maximum variant (complete substitute lights permissible)
Minimum variant (Japan, United States Of America, Canada, Australia and China):
In these countries, the left turn signal light (E1e5) and the right turn signal light (E2e5) must not be substituted by the pulsed actuation of the left front fog lamp (E5/1) and the right front fog lamp (E5/2).
In United States Of America and Canada the substitution of the left turn signal light (E3e1) and the right turn signal light (E4e1) is permitted for turn signaling. The variant for United States Of America and Canada is implemented via a separate variant coding in the rear SAM control unit (N10/8).
Lamp failure check:
A lamp defect is displayed as a text message in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
The table below depicts the scope of the substitute lights for model 164.1.
Emergency light function
Function requirements:
^ Circuit 15 On
Function sequence for emergency light function
The goal of the emergency light function is to avoid the failure of the entire front or rear vehicle lighting because of a single error (e.g. failure of the front SAM control unit (N10) or failure of the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B)).
For this reason, the front SAM control unit and rear SAM control unit (N10/8) each have separate hardware which guarantees the emergency light function.
In the event of a failure of CAN-B or an SAM control unit, when the ignition is on, the exterior lights are activated within t < 1 s as follows:
By the front SAM control unit:
^ Left standing and parking lights (E1e3) and right standing and parking lights (E2e3)
^ Left low beam (E1e2) and right low beam (E2e2) (without code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination)
^ Request for "Low beams" to the xenon headlamp supply module (E1n4) and to the xenon headlamp supply module (E2n4) (up to 8.7.07 for code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination)
^ Request for "Low beams" to the xenon headlamp control unit (E1n1) and to the xenon headlamp control unit (E2n1) (as of 9.7.07 for code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination)
^ Left side-marker lamp (E1e6) and right side-marker lamp (E2e6) ( United States Of America and Canada only)
By the rear SAM control unit (without code (849) Spare tire holder/ spare tire):
^ Left rear fog lamp and taillights (E3e2) and right rear fog lamp and taillights (E4e2) (model 164.1 only)
^ Left brake light (E3e4) and right brake light (E4e4) (for model 164.8 only)
^ Left taillights, side-marker lamp, parking lights (E3e8) and right taillights, side-marker lamp, parking lights (E4e8)
^ Left license plate lamp, rear-end door (E19/3) and right license plate lamp, rear-end door (E19/4)
By the rear SAM control unit (with code (849) Spare tire holder/ spare tire):
^ Left brake light and taillights (E3/5e4) and right brake light and taillights (E4/5e4)
^ Left taillight, side-marker lamp, parking light and right taillight, side-marker lamp, parking light (not for model 164.8 without United States Of America and Canada)
^ Left license plate lamp, spare tire carrier (E19/5) and right license plate lamp, spare tire carrier (E19/6)
By the rear SAM control unit (for code (550) Trailer hitch) via the trailer hitch socket (13-pin) (X58) (not United States Of America and Canada) or via the trailer hitch socket (7-pin) (X58/11) (for United States Of America and Canada):
^ Taillight of trailer
^ Trailer license plate lamp
