Noises at the Instrument Panel

Overview of noise sources





A. Rubbing noises in the area of the right side of the windshield (1,
Figure 1)

B. Creaking noises in the area of the instrument panel near the A-pillar (2, Figure 1)

C. Rattling noises in the area of the glove box (only with SA code 819) (3, Figure 1)

D. Rattling noises in the area of the glove box lid (4, Figure 1)

Procedures

A. Rubbing noises in the area of the right side of the windshield

Models 164.175/186 up to VIN A074262

Rubbing noises occur on the instrument panel in the area of the right side of the windshield due to the instrument panel contacting the crossmember under the windshield.

1. Remove instrument panel upper section. (See WIS-document
AR68.10-P-1020GZ)





2. Stick felt strip (1, Figure 2), material thickness approx. 3 mm, on the air duct below the instrument panel.

3. Install instrument panel upper section. (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1020GZ)

B. Creaking noises in the area of the instrument panel near the A-pillar

Models 164.175/186 up to VIN A104410

Creaking noises in the area of the instrument panel near the A-pillar occur due to the crossmember under the instrument panel contacting the heavy-duty foil on the inside of the A-pillar.

1. Remove side paneling on right of instrument panel using a plastic wedge. (See WIS-document AR68.30-P-4010GZ)





2. Loosen crossmember bolts (1, Figure 3) under the right of the instrument panel.

3. Place an angle drift (3, Figure 3) into positioning hole (2, Figure 3) of the crossmember and press cockpit 2 - 3 mm away from the A-pillar towards the interior.

4. Tighten the crossmember bolts (1, Figure 3) to 30 Nm.

5. Install side paneling on the right of the instrument panel.

C. Rattling noises in the area of the glove box (with SA code 819, CD Changer)

Models 164.175/186 with code 819 up to VIN A074262





Rattling noises can occur in the area of the glove box due to the MOST line (1, Figure 4) from the head unit to the CD changer contacts the air duct (2, Figure 4)

1. Remove glove compartment. (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1400GZ)

2. Wrap electrical tape around the MOST line (1, Figure 4).

3. Install glove compartment. (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1400GZ)

D. Rattling noises in the area of the glove box lid

Models 164.175/186 up to VIN A104410

Rattling noises in the glove box lid can occur due to the preload of the glove box lid being out of tolerance.





1. Loosen and adjust striker (1, Figure 5) to increase the preload of the lid.
