GF82.61-P-2003GZ Navigation, Function
- with CODE (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
- except CODE (498) Japan version

Function
Activation of the menu for controlling the navigation ensues via the "Navigation" command. Then, the voice control system (VCS) enables the navigation commands. A full destination can be entered for each language. Depending on size, place names can be spoken directly, or spelled out at any given time. Street names, centers, intersections have to be spelled out. The destination oriented navigation can be started once a destination has been entered. A destination-oriented navigation that is running can be stopped by voice command. It is not possible to enter a destination when the navigation system is running

Spelling and matching
The so-called process of matching is required to determine the most likely successful hit from the spelled out words.

Matching (comparison of entered letters and an already existing list on the navigation CD) is described in the following. While entering the spelling into the voice control system (VCS), matching is prepared in the navigation system. The preparation mainly consists of building the necessary matching list from the entries on the navigation CD. This structure can be set up directly from the entries on the navigation CD. The voice control system (VCS) transmits the recognition results to the navigation system (approx. 5 alternative sequences of letters, sorted by recognition probability). The recognition result is analyzed or compared by the matching algorithm against the previously prepared matching list. The result is a list of probable choices.

The programs and data for matching and the build-up of the matching lists are provided by the particular navigation manufacturers. The matching algorithm is a procedure, which is geared towards filtering out the most likely meaning from an existing list in sequences of letters that contain faults. Following the matching process the results are then shown on the display. The user can select a place from this list, by speaking out the number of the desired place.

Entering addresses
The radio and navigation unit (A2/56) or the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) have to be in navigation mode in order to be able to enter an address. The address can be entered in several entry steps (entry of the location, entry of the street, intersection, and house number). Finally, you can then start the destination-oriented navigation.

There are two entry options: either a complete address can be entered via voice command, or only one part is specified via voice command and the rest via the keypad.

Entering a place
After entering the "entering a city" command, the vocabulary for the city name entry is activated as whole words. The size of the vocabulary, in other words the number of cities that can be entered using whole words depends on the VCS destination hardware. These cities can be spoken "naturally" (e.g., Stuttgart, Hildesheim, Ulm etc.).
The speech recognition results are numbered and shown on the display categorized according to recognition probability. The user can select the destination by stating each number. The user is presented with a selection of available commands on the display after pressing the VCS [SBS] on button (S111s4) when in initial user mode.
The first line shows the destination (city or street) that was last entered either in written form or via voice command.

Spelling out place
In this function all place names can be entered in the partial spelling mode. Here it is usually sufficient to speak the first 5 to 6 letters of the place name, in order to clearly designate it. The voice recognizer is activated here for spelling out. After entering the first letters a comparison is made with the navigation system's database. The results are shown on the display. If the desired city name appears in the displayed lists, then the desired city can be accepted by using the "accept number X" command.

Entering street
Entry of the street name is carried out in the same way as the entry of the place name in spelling mode. In doing so, the entire number of possible streets that exist in the selected city are represented by the navigation system. If no digitized streets are available, then this information is provided to the user by the voice control system (VCS).

The system retrieves the current target data from the navigation system and displays a window with the command options. Usually it is sufficient to speak the first 5 to 6 letters of the street name, in order to clearly designate it.

Entering a house number or starting the destination-oriented navigation
The user can now either start the destination-oriented navigation or, where possible for the selected street, enter another house number. In major cities the streets are digitized up to the corresponding house numbers. It is now possible to select the desired house number via voice command.
A window displays another list containing command options. As usual the user can now select the entry he/she requires.

Entering a complete address
The user is guided through the complete dialog by the voice control system (VCS) after entering an initial command for the entry of a destination address. This command enables a complete address to be entered without any pause.

Starting destination-oriented navigation
If a valid destination was entered, then navigation can be started via voice dialog.

Storage of navigation destination memory (entered destination)
If a destination was entered into the navigation system in written form or via a voice command, then the current destination can be transferred into the address book by using the "save destination" command. If the spoken sequence number is already given, then the destination is stored there, otherwise a new entry is generated in the address book.

Changing destination area
A DVD is available for navigation systems on which several countries are digitized. These countries can only be individuall invoked, i.e. only destinations in the country which is currently active on the DVD can be selected. In order to be able to select another country on the DVD by speech, the voice command "Change destination area" has been introduced.
