Function
The interior lights (IBL) system is used to illuminate the entire vehicle interior depending on various factors (e.g. door open). The overhead control panel control unit (N70) is the master for the entire interior lights.
In addition to this, the illumination can be switched on and off manually.

Control possibilities

^ Manual actuation via operating switches
- Pressing the dome lamp switch (N70s4) causes the 1st seat row left interior lamp and the 1st seat row right interior lamp to be switched on
- Pressing the rear dome lamp switch (N70s2) causes the 3rd seat row dome lamp to be switched on
- Pressing the particular lamp will cause the 2nd seat row left dome lamp and the 2nd seat row right dome lamp to be switched on
- Pressing the 1st seat row left reading lamp switch and the 1st seat row right reading lamp switch causes the left reading lamp and the right reading lamp in the front to be switched on or off
- Pressing the corresponding switch in the 3rd seat row dome lamp causes the 3rd seat row left reading lamp and the 3rd seat row right reading lamp to be switched on

^ When any door is opened the
- roof lighting,
- entrance/exit lamps and
- footwell illumination is switched on.

^ If the standing lamp (circuit 58d) is switched on the
- door inside handle illumination and
- search and function illumination is switched on.

^ If the central locking (ZV) is unlocked the
- roof lighting is switched on in dimmed state. Switch-off is 30 seconds after unlocking.

^ If the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed the
- roof lighting is switched on in dimmed state. Switch-off is automatic in line with the run-on time set in the instrument cluster. The run-on time can be set to 0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 s.

^ If the anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) code 551 is triggered or in the event of a panic alarm (USA only) the
- roof lighting and
- footwell illumination are switched on without dimming.

^ Actuation via contact switch
- left and right sun visor with illuminated mirror and
- glove compartment illumination with switch
- front center console cup holder illumination (E20/2)
- front center console illumination (E36/2)

Illumination

Entrance and exit illumination
With a present "Night" signal from the rain/light sensor and after opening one of the doors, the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) sends a signal over the CAN-B to the overhead control panel control unit. The overhead control panel control unit then sends the switch-on signal to the respective front door control unit, which switches on the corresponding entrance/exit lamp. The rear entrance/exit lamps are actuated by the rear SAM control unit.

Front and rear door inside handle illumination
For circuit 15R on and with a pending "Night" signal from the rain/ light sensor and after switching on the standing lamp (circuit 58d) the
- left front door inside handle illumination (E17/11),
- right front door inside handle illumination (E17/12),
- left rear door inside handle illumination (E17/13) and
- right rear door inside handle illumination (E17/14) are activated.

The front door inside handle illumination is actuated by the respective front door control unit.
Actuation of the rear door inside handle illumination is performed by the rear SAM control unit.

Footwell lights
The rear SAM control unit reads in the status of all vehicle doors. With a present "Night" signal from the rain/light sensor and after opening one of the doors, the rear SAM control unit sends a signal over the CAN-B to the overhead control panel control unit.

After that, the overhead control panel control unit transmits the switch on signal for the
- right front footwell lamp
- left front footwell lamp
- right rear footwell lamp and
- left rear footwell lamp to the front SAM control unit.

Ambient lamps
The left outside mirror ambient lamp and the right outside mirror ambient lamp are actuated by the particular front door control unit. For this purpose, the overhead control panel control unit receives the unlock signal from the EIS [EZS] control unit. The signal to switch on the ambient lamps in the outside mirrors is then sent by the overhead control panel control unit along with the "Night" signal from the rain/light sensor to the door control unit over CAN-B.

Search and function illumination
If the standing lamp is switched on, the brightness of all illuminated controls is automatically adapted by a brightness sensor (A1b1) integrated into the instrument cluster to the light conditions of the interior.

The pushbutton switches instrument and controls illumination button, bright (A1s4) and instrument and controls illumination button, dim (A1s5) on the instrument cluster can be used to set the brightness to suit individual needs.

Roof lighting
The roof lighting contains the manual and automatic switching on of the front interior lamps in the overhead control panel control unit and rear dome lamp.

Vanity mirror illumination
By opening the mirror cover in the sun visor, the left front vanity mirror illumination switch (S101) or the right front vanity mirror illumination switch (S102) is automatically actuated and the left front illumination or right front illumination is switched off.
It is switched off by closing the corresponding mirror cover or automatically 30 minutes after circuit 15 off.

Glove compartment illumination
The glove compartment illumination with switch is switched on when circuit 15R is on by opening the glove compartment. It is switched off by closing the glove compartment or automatically after 15 minutes of bus idle.

Center console and cup holder illumination
The front center console cup holder illumination and the front center console illumination are illuminated at circuit 58d, if the corresponding compartment is open.

As this illumination is switched dependent upon circuit 58d, it can also be dimmed using the instrument and controls illumination button, bright and instrument and controls illumination button, dim.

Load compartment lamps
When the rear-end door is opened, the rear SAM control unit receives a signal from the rear door locking unit and switches the left luggage compartment lamp (E18/5) on. If at the same time the rear SAM control unit receives the "Night" signal via CAN-B from the rain/light sensor, then the rear-end door ambient lamp as well as the rear-end door warning lamp are switched on.

The rear-end door ambient lamp and the left luggage compartment lamp are switched off when the rear-end door is closed. The rear- end door warning lamp is switched off similarly by closing the rear- end door or also automatically after 10 minutes by the rear SAM control unit.
