Location
The instrument cluster is located in the dashboard on the driver-side.

Task
The instrument cluster has the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuation of components
- Output of warning tones and indicator tones

Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
The input factors are read in with the following connections:
- Interior CAN
- Engine compartment CAN

Interior CAN
The signals of the following components are read-in over the interior CAN:
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56) (with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
- Front SAM control unit (N10)
- Rear SAM control unit (N10/8)
- Overhead control panel control unit (N70)
- Driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1) (with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors))
- Passenger-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory N32/2 (with code (242) Electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory)
- Left front door control unit (N69/1)
- Right front door control unit (N69/2)
- KEYLESS-GO control unit (N69/5) (with code (889) Keyless Go)
- EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)

Engine compartment CAN
The signals of the following components are read-in over the engine compartment CAN:
- Left front reversible emergency tensioning retractor (A76)
- Right front reversible emergency tensioning retractor (A76/1)
- Intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT (A80)
- DTR controller unit (A89) (with code (219) Distronic (signals read-in by the ESP control unit via the vehicle dynamics CAN)
- Restraint systems control unit (N2/7)
- CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (on gasoline engine)
- Transfer case control unit (N15/7) (for model 164 with CODE (430) Off-road package)
- Rear axle differential lock control unit (N15/9) (for model 164 with code (430) Off-road package)
- ESP control unit (N47-5)
- Steering column module (N80)
- Fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit (Y3/8n4)

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.

Actuation of components
Components are actuated with the following lines:
- Direct line
- Engine compartment CAN

Direct line
All the internal actuators (e.g. indicator and warning lamps, stepper motors of displays, multifunction display) as well as instrument illumination are controlled over a direct line by the instrument cluster.

Engine compartment CAN
The following component is actuated via the engine compartment CAN:
- ESP control unit (roller test mode)

Output of warning tones and indicator tones
The instrument cluster actuates the following components to issue the Warning and indicator tones:
- Warning buzzer (A1h1)
- Acoustic turn signal indicator (A1h2)
