SUBJECT: USE OF BREAK-IN OIL AND BREAK-IN OIL FILTER AFTER MAJOR ENGINE REPAIRS ALL MODELS

The use of Mercedes-Benz approved break-in oil and a break-in oil filter (see Parts Information below) is mandatory for the first 800-1000 miles of operation after major engine repairs. This will assure good oil control and normal oil consumption after the break-in period and avoid warranty conflicts in case of premature failures after repairs.

The following repairs require the use of the break-in oil and filter:

1.. New engine replacement or exchange engine installation (break-in filter already with engine).

2. Short block (fitted block) installation.

3. Re-honing and piston ring replacement. (1)

4. New crankcase installation.

5. New piston installation. (1)

(1) NOTE: In aluminum engines (i.e. M116.96/117.96), the use of break-in oil and filter is not required if only new pistons or rings are installed.

After the break-in period (800-1000 miles), normal service schedules must be resumed.
