ENGINES 616 AND 617 WITH TDC TRANSMITTER BRACKET
This Service Information is being reissued to include engine type 617.950, which also has an integrated TDC transmitter. Please destroy your copy of 58/14, March 1983..
FIGURE 1 - MAGNETIC PROBE (TOOL NO. 616 589 00 21 00):
A magnetic probe (Figure 1) is available as a special tool to measure the speed of the subject diesel engines. The probe includes a TDC transmitter (transmitting the RPM signal), a test socket, and alligator clips for connection to the vehicle battery. This special tool is used in conjunction with the All-Test 3610-MB Universal Digital Tach, available through the Mercedes-Benz Standard Equipment Program. This probe will also be compatible with future engine testers which conform to Mercedes-Benz requirements.
NOTE: Engine types 617.950/951/952 have an integrated TDC transmitter and therefore do not need this magnetic probe.
FIGURE 2 - CONNECTION SCHEMATIC:
Instructions for Using the Probe
When installing the special tool into the TDC transmitter bracket, the snap-on connector must be slipped on the securing bolt (Figure 2) down to the stop, otherwise the TDC transmitter can be damaged. If the tool is installed correctly, the insertion rod cannot be rotated. Engage the spring at the upper end of the insertion rod in the engine suspension eye as a safeguard.
The TDC transmitter is coupled to a test socket, which is connected to the 9-pin diagnostic plug of the engine tester (see connection schematic). In the case of the All-Test 3610-MB Universal Digital Tach, the magnetic probe connection cable must also be connected to the vehicle battery via the alligator clamps provided (this does not apply to engine testers powered by workshop 115 Volt AC systems).
FIGURE 3 - TDC TRANSMITTER:
A defective transmitter of this special tool can be replaced separately and is available as a spare part (see Parts Information). Prior to installation of the transmitter into the snap-on connector, the bore (arrow, Figure 3) must be enlarged to a diameter of 8 mm. The three cable straps with which the lead is secured to the insertion rod should also be replaced at this time.
