Engine - Noisy Valve Lifters

REF. NO. 18/35

To: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: September 1987

SUBJECT:
OIL RETURN CHECK-TUBE
ENGINE 103

As of December 1986 production, an oil return-flow check-tube (2) with stop collar (arrow) was installed in the cylinder head (Figure 1).

The previous version check-tube did not have a stop collar.

The stop collar prevents the check-tube from being pulled up.

Effective Serial Number

In case of customer complaints regarding noisy valve lifters, even after replacement thereof, on vehicles with a lower chassis end number, it is possible that the return-flow check-tube may have worked its way loose thereby reducing the oil supply to the hydraulic lifters. In this case the oil return-flow check-tube with stop collar must be installed after removal of the cylinder head.
