Seat Belts - Installation of Locking Retractors: Overview

SUBJECT: SUBSEQUENT INSTALLATION OF AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTORS FRONT SEAT BELTS MODELS 108 AND 109
The original equipment two piece shoulder/lap seat belt for models 108 and 109 is no longer available as a spare part. However, a replacement automatic locking retractor seat belt can be installed.

Note: Vehicles originally not equipped with a seat belt system, can also be equipped with the automatic locking retractor system.


The automatic locking retractor system requires four anchorage points:

- one anchorage at the tunnel for the lock.
- three anchorages at the "B" pillar for the reel.

Note: All existing factory installed anchorages have SAE threads.

Vehicles With Existing Two Piece shoulder/Lap seat Belt System

The original shoulder/lap seat belt system used only three anchorage points. The fourth anchorage point needed for the automatc inertia reel system already exists in the "B" pillar approximately 255 mm from the base (Fig. 4, 1st version and 2nd version "B" pillar, respectively).

This anchorage point will accept a SAE 7/16"-14 UNC threaded fastener.

Remove the "B" pillar cover to verify the exact location of the fourth anchorage before piercing a hole into the pillar cover for access.
Note: It is believed that the following vehicles are equipped with a threaded fourth anchorage point. However, to guarantee accuracy, remove the "B" pillar cover and visually verify the existance of the fourth anchorage point.
