Vehicles Originally Not Equipped With Seat Belt System

These vehicles have three factory installed anchorage points. The fourth anchorage point needed for the automatic locking retractor system must be located and installed in the "B" pillar. The attached Work Instructions #215 describe the procedure and contains parts information.

Note: It is believed that the following vehicles may have either the fourth anchorage point - but not threaded, or no fourth anchorage point at all. However, to guarantee accuracy, remove the "B" pillar cover and visually verify the existance of the fourth anchorage point.

SUBJECT: SUBSEQUENT INSTALLATION OF AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTORS FRONT SEAT BELTS MODELS 108 AND 109


These work instructions apply to those vehicles which were not originally equipped with a seat belt system (see chart on page 4 of S. I. MBNA 91/10).

FIGURE 2 - 2ND VERSION "B" PILLAR:

1. Move both front seats to their maximum forward position.

2. Remove "B" pillar cover.

3. Mark locations on "B" pillar for drilling holes. Use threaded plate as a template to mark the locations (Fig. 2).


Length C = approx. 255 mm


4. Drill two 6.5 mm diameter holes
(d) into the "B" pillar to mount the threaded plate (Fig. 2). Then drill a hole for the retractor mounting bolt:
- 25 mm diameter for 1st version "B" pillar or
- 14 mm diameter for 2nd version "B" pillar (e, Fig. 2) Apply MB zinc dust paint to the bare metal edges.

CAUTION! On vehicles with power windows or central locking, ensure that the protective wire tubing is not drilled through.

5. Insert a piece of wire opening "a" of the "B" pillar and guide it throught the lower opening (b, Fig. 2). Attach the lower end of the wire to the threaded plate and pull the threaded plate up into place through opening "B" and securely fasten with two bolts.
6. Drill a 14 mm hole into the "B" pillar cover for installation of the locking retractor (independent of which version "B" pillar).

7. Mount "B" pillar cover.

8. Locate the top anchorage point in the "B" pillar and the bottom anchorage point in the side member and drill the holes, or remove existing plugs.

9. Install automatic locking retractors seat belt system Press trim caps onto top and bottom anchorage point bolt heads.

Note: For a more flush mounting of the top an chorage, remove black metal spacer.


Note: When securing the locking retractor, ensure that the retractor is horizontal (level) and not tilted towards the front or back.

10. Remove plug on tunnel and punch a hole in the carpeting. Install buckle and press trim cap onto bolt.


Tightening Torques


7/16" bolt 50 N-m
5/16" bolt 25 N-m
Note: The seat belt latch plate and cover may differ in appearance.
