Expansion Valve: Service and Repair

Tightening Torques:
Pressure hose to expansion valve 5/8"
- 15-18 Nm
Suction hose to expansion valve 7/8"
- 29-37 Nm
Evaporator pipeline 3/4"
- 24-28 Nm
Evaporator pipeline 3/4"
- 29-37 Nm

Special Tools:
Open box end wrench with 3/8" square insert
- 17mm 000 589 69 03 00
- 19mm 000 589 70 03 00
- 22mm 000 589 71 03 00
- 24mm 000 589 72 03 00

Note: If considerable contamination is found in the expansion valve, or if the a/c compressor is being replaced, then the expansion valve should also be replaced. The receiver dehydrator must always be replaced.

Removal:
1. Discharge air conditioning system (recycling).
2. Remove cover at left (righthand steering vehicle at the right) under instrument panel.






3. Open housing by half (65).






4. Use a box-end wrench to loosen all hose and pipe connections at the expansion valve (35) and then screw them all the way out.
5. Remove expansion valve and use plugs to seal off connections.

Installation:
6. Moisten threads with refrigerant oil and check 0-rings (14).
7. Temporarily screw expansion valve (35) to the evaporator pipes.
8. Temporarily connect the refrigerant lines (66 and 67) to the expansion valve. Then tighten all connections with box-end wrench.
9. Evacuate air-conditioning system. Refill and check for function and leaks.






10. Carefully connect housing (65) to expansion valve.
11. Install cover under instrument panel.
