REF. No. 05/67TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE: July 1988
(Supersedes 05/62, June 1987)
SUBJECT:
CAMSHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
ENGINES 601, 602 AND 603
Note:
Changed sequence on engines 602 and 603.
To avoid breaking the camshaft during removal/installation, the camshaft
bearing bolts must be loosened/tightened gradually and alternately.
The following procedure MUST be strictly adhered to.
Procedure
Removal
1. Remove valve cover.
2. Set engine to ignition TDC of first cylinder.
3. Remove chain tensioner (job no. 05-310).
4. Place alignment mark on camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
5. Remove sprocket; secure sprocket and chain with a piece of wire to front of cylinder head.
Engine 601
6. Remove both bolts from bearings (solid arrows, Figure 1).
7. Gradually, one at a time, loosen both bolts alternately from bearing no. 2 and 4 until the counterpressure is relieved (outlined arrows, Figure 1).
Engine 602
6. Remove both bolts from bearings (solid, Figure 2).
7. Gradually, one turn at a time, loosen both bolts alternately from bearing nos. 3, 4 and 5 until the counterpressure is relieved (out-lined arrows, Figure 2).
Engine 603
6. Remove both bolts from bearings (solid arrows Figure 3).
7. Gradually, one turn at a time, loosen both bolts alternately from bearing nos. 2, 3, 4 and 7 until the counterpressure is relieved (outlined arrows, Figure 3).
Installation
1. Proceed with the installation in reverse sequence of removal.
2. Place camshaft in cylinder head so that the TDC marking is on top.
3. Gradually tighten both bearing bolts of bearings 2 and 4, engine 601; 3, 4, and 5, engine 602; and 2, 3, 4 and 7, engine 603 in several steps and alternately one turn at a time, to 25 Nm (outlined arrows, Figures 1, 2 and 3 respectively).
4. Install remainder of bearing caps and bolts in random order. Tighten bolts to 25 Nm.
5. Install sprocket (remove wire used for holding up the timing chain), observe alignment marks. Tighten to 45 Nm.
6. Install chain tensioner (job no. 05-310). Tighten to 80 Nm.
7. Install valve cover. Tighten to 10 Nm.
