Fuel Injection Nozzle, Line, and Pump Cleanliness

Description of Revisions:
This SI replaces the previous version dated July 1989. Changes include: Protective plastic cover vendors are listed, dimensions of the fuel injection system openings are listed.

The fuel injection nozzle has not contained a fuel filter cartridge (edge filter) since 1988. See Fig 1. The lack of a filter cartridge requires extreme cleanliness during service operations involving the fuel injection nozzles.

Immediately after removing the fuel injection and return lines from a nozzle assembly, and before removing the assembly from the engine, cap the fuel injection and return lines and the nozzle assembly fuel intake and fuel return openings. After removing the nozzle assembly from the engine, cap the nozzle and seal the assembly in a plastic bag to prevent contaminants from entering the nozzle.

If the injection lines are removed from the injection pump, both the injection lines and the injection pump outlets should be capped.

Some sources for protective plastic covers are listed.
