Instrument Cluster - Special Tool for Removal

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: May 1990

REF.NO. 54/62

SUBJECT:
REMOVING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
MODEL 129

After inspection of instrument clusters returned under warranty, damages have become evident which can be attributed to incorrect removal of the cluster. Therefore, the following should be noted:

Removing Instrument Cluster

To remove the instrument cluster, two special removal hooks are required (Figure 1).

With the hook ends facing down, insert one hook on either side between the instrument cluster and the dashboard. Push the hooks all the way in up to the plastic handle (or to the paint mark on older hooks) and turn the hooks 90° inwards. Carefully pull out the hooks until they engage in the recesses of the instrument cluster (Figure 2).

Pull out the instrument cluster while angling the hooks outwards approximately 120° to prevent the hooks from slipping out of their recesses (Figure 3).
