REPLACEMENT A/C COMPRESSOR WITH MODIFIED FLANGE CONNECTION

The GM/Harrison R-4 A/C compressor installed in the above-listed models has been replaced with a modified version. The new version features a modified flange connection for the hose assembly. Two seal washers (Figures 1-2) are used at the flange connection instead of the 0-rings (Figure 3) on the previous version. The seal washers consist of metal washers with integrated molded rubber seals which mate with the compressor's flange. The previous 0-rings cannot be used with the new version compressor.

When replacing an A/C compressor in the affected vehicles first determine if the unit installed was manufactured by GM/Harrison. If so, inspect which version compressor is installed to determine which seal to use when reinstalling the hose assembly in other words, use the new seal washers if the flange ports have flat sealing surfaces, or use the 0-ring seals if the flange ports have 0-ring grooves in the sealing surfaces. Refer to the procedure below when installing the new seal washers.

Seal washer installation

^ When installing the seal washers, keep dirt or foreign material from getting on the sealing surfaces of the washers, hose assembly or compressor ports.

^ Do not reuse seal washers.

^ Seal washers do not have to be oiled prior to installation.

1. Install seal washer onto ports of flange connection. Washers must "bottom" against surface of flange.

2. Attach hose assembly on compressor, making sure the seal washers are seated within the machined surfaces of the compressor.

3. Hold hose assembly in place and hand tighten mounting screw. Tighten bolt to specified torque.

Tightening torque: 34 Nm.

4. When correctly installed, there will be approx. 1.2 mm gap between the compressor housing the and the hose assembly. Do not mistake this as a loose connection or a mis-assembled joint.
