DATE: September 1994

REF. NO.: 00/56

SUBJECT: ALL MODELS
AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE LABELING ACT

The American Automobile Labeling Act passed by Congress requires that all passenger cars. multipurpose vehicles. light trucks and small buses manufactured on or after October 1. 1994 display PARTS CONTENTS INFORMATION labels. The purpose of the content label is to aid potential purchasers in the selection of new passenger vehicles by providing country of origin information. The label must contain the vehicle's U.S. Canadian parts content percentage. foreign parts content percentage (if > 15%), engine and transmission country of origin. and location of vehicle final assembly.

Beginning in October, MBNA will affix the label under the Monroney price label on all new cars leaving the VPC. Five different labels are required to accommodate the current four product lines: C-Class. E-Class. S-Class and SL-Class; and the E-Class station wagon (different location of final assembly).

For registration year 1995. all MBNA car lines will be identified as having 2% U.S. Canadian parts content (for example, components of the transmission, sound system. mirrors. air bag and certain tires) and 81% German parts content. The remaining unspecified 17% parts content is sourced from more than 30 other countries. Parts content does not include costs for final assembly. distribution or other non-parts costs.

The factory and its suppliers are legally responsible for information calculations and record keeping. MBNA is legally responsible for providing the labels and handling government reporting duties.

Dealers are legally responsible for maintaining the labels. Maintaining the labels means keeping the labels attached to the vehicle and visible for consumers until such time as a vehicle has been sold to a consumer for purpose other than resale. If a dealer receives a new car produced on or after October 1, 1994 that has a missing. damaged or incorrect Parts Content Label. the car may not legally be shown to or be accessible by any consumers until the correct label information is displayed on the car. Dealers may not remove a label for any reason except to install an undamaged or correct replacement label. or after the car is sold to the consumer. If a label is missing or damaged beyond repair. photocopy the correct label from the attachments included with this S.l. and install the label under the Monroney price label. DO NOT remove a label from another car!
