Console - Caution While Replacing Wood Trim

DATE: February 1992

REF. NO.: 68/3

SUBJECT: MODEL 140
CAUTION DURING REMOVAL OF CENTER CONSOLE WOOD TRIM TO AVOID BLOWN CIGAR LIGHTER FUSE

When removing the center console wood trim, the ash tray cover must be removed first. To facilitate this procedure, the transmission selector lever should be moved out of the Park position (parking brake set), which requires turning the ignition key on and depressing the brake pedal.

After moving the selector lever out of the Park position, turn the ignition key off since the uninsulated terminals of the cigar lighter will be exposed once the ashtray cover is removed. If an angle screwdriver is used to remove the console wood panel, it is possible to contact the cigar lighter terminals causing a short, if the ignition key is on, and thus blow the fuse. This may not be noticed before returning the vehicle to the owner, possibly causing customer dissatisfaction.

For the procedure, refer to the SMS job no. 68-231.
