B. Install. of Engine Block Heater 140.042/051 (400SE/500SEL)
1. Lift vehicle and remove left front wheel.2. Remove front and rear encapsulation panel from below engine.
3. Drain engine coolant at drain plug on left side of engine block. Drain coolant into a suitable container for reuse later.
4. Remove poly-V-belt from compressor pulley. Remove A/C compressor mounting screws and move compressor forward. without disconnecting compressor hoses.
5. Remove core plug with a 22 mm 6-point socket. To do so, insert socket only into core plug. From wheelwell, insert socket wrench extension through opening between sub-frame and body, subsequently engaging extension in socket (arrow, Figure 7). Remove core plug.
6. Install block beater (arrow) using rubber 0-ring from the installation kit and not the alloy washer supplied (Figure 8). Tighten block heater with a 46 mm socket using the method described in step 5 above.
Tightening torque: 70 N-m
7. Attach electrical cable to block heater.
8. Reinstall A/C compressor and poly-V-belt.
9. Route electrical cable along transmission oil cooler line to front of vehicle and attach with cable ties (Figure 9).
Note:
Be sure to route electrical cable along bottom of oil cooler line. otherwise there will be insufficient clearance to the poly-V-belt (arrow, Figure 9).
10. Continue routing electrical cable along transmission oil cooler line underneath radiator frame and up to towing eye flap in bumper cover. Attach with cable ties.
11. Open towing eye flap in bumper cover. Insert cable plug through slot (Figure 10) in towing eye flap and reinstall towing eye flap in bumper cover.
12. The cable may now be easily accessed for winter use or alternately reinserted through the slot in the towing eye flap for storage when not needed (Figure 11).
13. Reinstall encapsulation panels.
14. Test coolant for sufficient antifreeze protection, refill and bleed cooling system. Pressure test system for leaks.
15. Run engine. Check for proper coolant level.
