Steering Box - Revised Tightening Torque

REVISED TIGHTENING TORQUE OF STEERING BOX

The tightening torque for the steering box on models 140, as described on page 350 of the Model Year 1992 (USA) Model 140 Preliminary Introduction Manual, has been revised from 100 Nm to 50 Nm with a tightening angle of 90 °.

In addition, maintenance job 4671, performed during the Inspection Service and Additional Work every 30,000 miles, no longer applies to models 140.

Please correct your copies of the M-B Maintenance System sheet for Model Years 1986-1992 as follows

4671 Steering box,
Except Model 140

In case of repair, the three M12 locking hex. bolts must be replaced. The thread surface and mating surface must be free of oil, grease and wax. Also, the bolts may not be retightened due to the microencapsulation material which coats the original threads.
