CRACKING AT BOTTOM OF WINDSHIELD
Revision: Parts listing expanded; production change information added.
Cracks at the bottom of the windshield may be caused by excessive pressure placed on the glass (b, Figure 1) by the lower trim pieces (d) as their screws (Figure 2) are tightened. This pressure can lead to stress cracks starting at the bottom of the windshield.
First rubber, then plastic, washers were placed under the trim mounting sleeves in production to ensure adequate clearance to the glass. To eliminate the need for spacers in most cases, the trim piece was then modified by increasing the length of the sleeves. These production changes occurred on the following approximate dates.
Effective Production Change Date:
Modification Production Date
Rubber washers March 1,1993
Plastic washers April 26,1993
Longer sleeves May 17,1993
When installing the trim pieces, make certain to maintain a gap (a, Figure 1) between the trim pieces and the glass by using a piece of paper as a gauge. If necessary, place 2 mm thick rubber or plastic washers under the trim piece mounting sleeves (d) to raise the trim piece off the glass.
Torque the mounting screws (Figure 2) to no more than 1.5 Nm. In addition, a "paper thick" gap (e, Figure 1) must be maintained between the mounting sleeves (d) and the glass (b).

When replacing windshield, (SMS Body assembly jobs 1, Model 140, Job No. 67-100), be sure to use nozzle included in the windshield installation kit as this will help ensure the adhesive bead thickness is correct. This, in turn, will help avoid positioning the glass in too high a position relative to the trim piece.
