INSTALLATION OF MAINTENANCE-FREE CRUISE CONTROL LINKAGE

Effective Serial Number Range

On vehicles within the chassis end number range given in the table shown, a new cruise control linkage assembly - which does not require periodic lubrication and maintenance - must be installed.

Check A-pillar door jamb for recall campaign label, with Recall Campaign number 94-0421, if a label is affixed, the repair was already performed.

Procedure (old assembly kit, part no. 111 070 31 21 26)

1. Remove vertical throttle return spring (1, Figure 1) and discard. The spring (1) is damaged during removal.

2. Disengage connecting rod ball socket at angle lever (2).

3. Remove horizontal throttle return spring (3) and discard. The spring (3) is damaged during removal.

4. Press off upper "E-clip" (4) retaining plastic drag lever and accelerator control lever. Press off lower "E-clip" (5) retaining fulcrum lever. Do not remove "E-clip" (7) retaining roller pin on fulcrum lever.

5. Slide plastic drag lever and metal accelerator control lever off shafts and move aside.

6. Disengage lower (connecting rod [6]) ball socket at fulcrum lever.

7. Slide off fulcrum lever assembly and discard. Before discarding old assembly, compare control rod length to that of the replacement assembly. Adjust new control rod to match old. Final adjustment is made in step 14.

8. Slide replacement fulcrum lever assembly onto shaft and secure with new "E-clip" provided (5).

Note:
The ball socket linkage in the assembly kit has been permanently lubricated, i.e. it no longer requires periodic lubrication with a Special Tool.

9. Attach lower (connecting rod [6]) ball socket.

10. Slide metal accelerator control lever onto shaft, making sure roller pin of fulcrum lever rests in slot.

11. Slide plastic drag lever onto shaft and secure both drag lever and accelerator control lever with new E-clip" provided (4).

12. Install new horizontal and vertical throttle return springs (1, 3).

13. Connect connecting rod ball socket to angle lever (2) and reinstall vertical throttle return spring (1).

14. Adjust accelerator control lever with connecting rod according to Service Microfiche, Engine 111, Combustion, Job. No. 30-1010.

15. Legibly write the recall campaign number and dealer code on one of the enclosed self-adhesive labels. Affix label to A-pillar door jamb.

Procedure (new assembly kit, part no.111 070 23 21 26)

1. Disconnect accelerator bowden cable (30) and transmission control pressure bowden cable (31, Figure 2).

2. Disconnect connecting rod (32/4. Figure 2) from EA/ISC/CC actuator lever.

3. Disconnect CC linkage (arrow, Figure 2).

4. Remove bracket (33, part no. 111 070 05 24) with lever assembly from intake manifold.

5. Disassemble lever assembly.

6. Reassemble lever assembly using new bracket (part no. 111 070 16 24) and parts supplied in assembly kit (part no. 111 070 23 23 26).

7. Install new bracket (33, part no. 111 070 16 24) with lever assembly onto intake manifold.

8. Connect CC linkage (arrow, Figure 3).

9. Connect new connecting rod (32/4, Figure 3) to EA/ISC/CC actuator lever.

10. Reconnect control pressure bowden cable (31) and accelerator bowden cable (30, Figure 3).

11. Install new return spring (32/20, 32/21, Fig. 3).

12. Adjust accelerator control according to SMS, Engine 111, Combustion, Job. No. 30-1010. For revised connecting rod adjustment procedure, refer to steps 13 - 15.

13. Disconnect connecting rod (32/4, Figure 3) from the throttle plate angle lever (32/5).

14. Angle lever (32/5, Figure 3) must be resting against idle stop of the ISC actuator (M 16/6).

15. Adjust connecting rod (32/4, Figure 3) so that when connected the inner top of the ball socket slightly contacts the ball head. Therefore, the connecting rod (32/4) along with the accelerator control are lifted slightly when attached.
