Recall - Secondary Hood Latch Replacement: Overview

Campaign No. 96-0113

February 1996

FILE:
SERVICE:
GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER

PARTS:
GROUP I OF INFORMATION - PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

SUBJECT:
MODEL 202
REPLACEMENT OF THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH HOOK ASSEMBLY

Enclosed is a sample copy of a letter which will be mailed in the near future to all owners of vehicles within the Effective Serial Number Range.

This campaign was initiated because MBAG has determined that, in isolated instances, the hood secondary latch hook may be damaged if the hood latch area of the vehicle is subjected to impact damage. In such a case, an improperly latched hood could pop open while driving the vehicle, obstructing the driver's visibility.

A modified secondary latch hook has been designed to be more resistant to impact damage.

Therefore, on vehicles within the chassis end number range given in the table, the hood latch hook must be replaced with the modified version.

See Work Instructions 351 Grp. 88 for installation instructions.

This recall involves model 202 vehicles produced up to May 1995. To identify whether a vehicle within the range is affected, perform a Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI). BY LAW, VEHICLES IN DEALER INVENTORY MAY NOT BE RETAILED UNTIL THE RECALL CAMPAIGN IS PERFORMED. THIS IS A WORLDWIDE ACTION - NON US VERSION VEHICLES ARE NOT ON VMI.

Please note that the MBNA news release for this recall will mention the Customer Care measures.
