A. Overview
B. Installation Instructions

A. Overview
Allowing an automotive battery to remain in a discharged condition quickly leads to irreversible damage to the battery. All automotive batteries experience a gradual loss of charge due to internal self-discharge as well as from current consumers, which operate when vehicle is at rest, such as the clock or anti-theft alarm system. If an automobile is not driven regularly, or for only brief periods, the battery charge losses may exceed the charging received from the generator. In such instances, the battery will inevitably become discharged and may suffer damage or have insufficient power to start the engine.

To provide an additional source of charging energy for the battery, a battery trickle charger may be installed. The trickle charger introduced here has the advantage of being fully automatic - it can remain connected to the battery for long periods without damage to the battery.

Included with the battery trickle charger kit are the trickle charger itself, an extension harness, and hardware used for installation. Additional hardware included with the trickle charger, which is not described in the Installations Instructions (B), should be discarded.

This battery trickle charger may be installed on a case by case basis to assists customers when a history of service calls or visits indicate driving habits likely to lead to battery discharge. Any such good will claim must have an MBNA authorization number to be eligible for consideration. Contact your Service Operations Manager or Technical Specialist.

Note:
On each installation, please make sure to review operation and the correct use of a battery trickle charger with the vehicle owner.

The wiring harness for the charging socket contains a diode to protect against reverse polarity and excessive current.

Note:
The battery trickle charger must be used only in conjunction with supplied charging socket. Please remove and discard the red plastic adapter cap from the charger accessory bag.

B. Installation Instructions

Model 129

1. Remove right side trunk covering. Locate and mark position as shown and carefully drill an 18 mm diameter hole (a) in the right side covering of the trunk compartment. A 1/4 pilot hole should be drilled first, and light drill pressure should be used, to avoid cracking the plastic trunk covering.

2. Install the charging socket with wiring harness (4) and secure from behind the side covering with the nut for charging socket (5). Do not over tighten the nut.

3. Partially remove the forward trunk liner to gain access to the rear fuse box (F20). Connect the wiring harness from the charging socket as follows:

^ Vehicles up to 08/95 production (old fuse box): RD/GN wire to the fused side of F20/5 in trunk fuse box. Route the wiring along the existing wiring harnesses.

^ Vehicles as of 09/95 production (new fuse box): RD/GN wire to the fused side of F20/7 in trunk fuse box. Adapt wire end using contact (006 545 3626), and install a 7.5 Amp fuse in position 7. Route the wiring along the existing wiring harnesses. Mark fuse card position 7 to read "Trickle Charger, 7.5A".

^ BR wire to W7, ground, right rear wheel well.

4. Reinstall all coverings. Be sure to provide the battery trickle charger (7) and extension harness (8) to the customer.

Model 140

1. Remove right side trunk covering. Locate and mark position as shown and drill an 18 mm diameter hole (b) in the right side covering of the trunk compartment.

2. Install charging socket with wiring harness (4) into the trunk covering, secure from behind with backing washer (6) and nut for charging socket (5).

3. Connect the wiring harness from the charging socket as follows:

^ RD/GN wire to connector block X4/5 in trunk.

^ BR wire to W7/1, ground, right rear taillamps.

4. Reinstall trunk covering.

5. Be sure to provide the battery trickle charger (7) and extension harness (8) to the customer.

Model 202

1. Remove right side trunk covering. Locate and mark position as shown and drill an 18 mm diameter hole (a) in the trunk covering.

2. Install the charging socket with wiring harness (4) and secure from behind the side covering with the backing washer (6) and nut for charging socket (5). Do not over tighten the nut. Position the charging socket so that the dust flap hinge is up.

3. Connect the wiring harness from the charging socket as follows:

^ RD/GN wire to the rear fuse box, screw connection E (old fuse box, up to 11/94) or directly to screw terminal on battery positive (+) terminal (new fuse box, as of 12/94).

^ BR wire to W7/1, ground, right rear wheel well.

4. Be sure to provide the battery trickle charger (7) and extension harness (8) to the customer.
