Glass - Warnings/Replacement Considerations

REF. NO. MBNA 67/04

DATE: December 1996

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

SUBJECT:
MODELS 129, 140 AND 210
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR GLASS REPLACEMENT IN
MERCEDES-BENZ VEHICLES AS OF MODEL YEAR 1996

As of model year 1996, all 210 models incorporate the AM/FM radio antenna within the rear windshield glass. In order to avoid reception difficulties, the rear windshield must not be tinted with metallic tinting material, and the correct glass, adhesive and installation procedures, outlined in Service Information 58/88 dated April 1996, must be followed. Failure to do so will result in diminished radio reception performance.

As of Model Year 1997, all 129 and 140 models are equipped with a rain sensor designed to automatically adjust the wipe interval dependent upon the amount of water on the front windshield. This is accomplished via infrared transmitters and receivers which measure the amount of light transmitted through the glass. In order for the system to function properly, it is tuned to the specifications of our original equipment glass. It is imperative that only glass specified by Mercedes-Benz be used in conjunction with vehicles equipped with the rain sensor system.

Note:
When performing any repairs on Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the correct procedures must be followed. Also, the correct materials, tools and equipment must be used. In the event that jobs are performed as sublet repairs, the dealer is responsible for providing these materials, tools, equipment and procedures to those performing the repairs. In order to maintain functional integrity of these systems, you must ensure that all sublet glass work is performed according to these guidelines.
