Enclosed is a sample copy of a letter which will be mailed in the near future to all owners of affected vehicles.

This campaign is initiated because MBAG has determined that the engine damper pulley may break due to a manufacturing fault.




















Effective Serial Number List - Replacement of Damper Pulley, 1996 Models with Engine 104

Therefore, the engine damper pulley must be replaced on affected vehicles listed in the Effective Serial Number List.

Vehicles which already had the damper pulley replaced at either the VPC's or at the factory will have a sticker affixed to the power steering pump reservoir. The sticker will either be red with no. 7, or orange with no. 28 written on it.

Vehicles which already had the campaign performed at the dealer will have a sticker affixed to the driver's door A pillar with R.C. 96-0413 written on it.

Approximately 152 vehicles are affected. Upon arrival of vehicles for repair, check Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI). Refer to attached list for affected vehicles.

By law, all unsold new vehicles in a dealer's possession and subject to the recall, must be held and repaired before owners take possession of these vehicles.

Parts will be blocked from (MB Net) system reordering. Dealer orders stating chassis no. of vehicle must be faxed to the respective PDC.

SUBJECT:
ALL 1996 MODELS WITH ENGINE 104 REPLACEMENT OF ENGINE DAMPER PULLEY

The procedure for removal of the engine damper pulley is divided into the following steps:

A. Removal of radiator fan shroud
B. Removal of viscous fan
C. Installation of crankshaft/ring gear retaining lock
D. Replacement of engine damper pulley

On affected vehicles listed in the attached Effective Serial Number List, the engine damper pulley must be replaced.

Vehicles which already had the pulley replaced at either the VPC's or at the factory will have a sticker affixed to the power steering pump reservoir. The sticker will either be red with no. 7, or orange with no. 28 written on it.

Vehicles which already had the recall campaign performed at the dealer will have a sticker affixed to the driver's door A pillar with R.C. 96-0413 written on it.

After completion of the campaign, write the recall no. (96-0413) on the recall sticker and affix the sticker to the driver's door A pillar.
