Removal and Replacement
REMOVAL
1. Drain rear axle oil
2. Remove rear axle speed sensor (L6)
3. Remove exhaust system (105) from flange connection
4. Remove exhaust shield (105c)
5. Remove propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a)
6. Remove propeller shaft (106) at rear axle center assemble
7. Support propeller shaft on reinforcement bracket
8. Remove cover of fuel pump assembly (140) and unhook fuel pump assembly at rubber rings
WARNING
^ Risk of accident when raising a rear axle half
^ Vehicle must not be lifted off the hoist contact surface
9. Remove rear axle shafts (37) at connecting flange
- Discard self-locking bolts with internal serrations or hexagon socket bolts and washers
10. Move rear axle shaft into approximately the horizontal position and slide together
- Tie rear axle shaft securely at rear axle carrier
11. Using assembly attachment tool No. 140 589 01 62 00, or equivalent and suitable lifting equipment, support rear axle center (50)
12. Unscrew bolts (50a) and remove stop plate (50b)
- Discard self-locking bolts
13. Remove front center assembly suspension[A Installation: l
14. Remove rear axle center assembly (50)
15. Remove rear axle breather
INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order, noting the following information:
- Replace self-locking bolts
- Clean magnetic tip of axle speed sensor, replace O-ring
- Install new self-locking bolts with internal serrations or hexagon socket bolts and washers for axles to drive flange
- Lightly lubricate thread on bold and bolt head support
- Mount front center assembly suspension as follows:
a. Install rubber mount (60b) and short 14 mm disk (60a) at top in rear axle carrier (1)
b. Install rubber mount with guide collar (60c) and long 17 mm disk (60d) at bottom. Ensure that the bearing is properly seated
c. Install assigned shim (60e) between disk (60d) and rear axle center assembly (50)
d. Replace self-locking hexagon nut or disk with integrated lock nut (60a)
- Depending on the version, 1-2 shims (60e) can be installed on the rear axle center assembly
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Self-locking nut, rear axle center assembly at front to rear axle carrier: 50 Nm
- Self-locking nut of front rear axle center assembly on rear axle carrier: 50 Nm
- Self-locking bolt of rear rear axle center assembly on rear axle carrier: 110 Nm
- Self-locking bolt of rear axle shaft on connecting flange: 70 Nm
- Rear axle center assembly breather: 25 Nm
- Self-locking nut of flexible disk on rear propeller shaft or rear axle center assembly:
- 10 mm: 40 Nm
- 12 mm: 60 Nm
- Hexagon bolts, propeller shaft intermediate bearing to frame floor:
- Bolt with washer: 25 Nm
- Bolt with collar and centering tip: 30 Nm
- Filling quantity, differential housing: 1.1 liters
