Group: O3

SUBJECT:
ENGINE 606.962
NEW CRANKSHAFT RADIAL LIP SEAL AND VIBRATION DAMPER WITH A NON- HARDENED SEALING SURFACE

Starting with July 1997 production, a new style crankshaft radial lip seal (with a teflon sealing lip) has been installed on the front of the crankshaft. A vibration damper with a non-hardened sealing surface for the radial lip seal will be introduced at a later date. The new style crankshaft radial lip seal exerts less pressure on the vibration damper sealing surface.

Installation notes:

The new style crankshaft radial lip seal can be installed on earlier engines (606.910/912) with a hardened sealing surface vibration dampner. Under no circumstances should the conventional style radial lip seal be installed in conjunction with a non-hardened sealing surface vibration dampener as this combination will not seal properly and will lead to oil leakage.

Due to the reduced wear to the sealing surface, it is no longer necessary to install the radial lip seal in the repair position.

The non-hardened vibration damper can be identified by the part number on the rear of the damper. Parts identification information

Part name Motor Part Number

Vibration damper 606.91 606 030 03 03
606.96 606 030 04 03

The newer style radial lip seal will be available after the current inventory of seals is depleted.
