REPLACEMENT OF LEFT/RIGHT SIDE AIRBAGS
This campaign has been initiated as a precautionary measure to replace left/right side airbags (2, Figure 1) in Models 210.020/055/072 which were produced from November 1996 to February 1997. Additionally, the wiring harness as well as the routing for each of the left/right side airbags within the front door frame must be inspected for chaffing/damage.
Effective Serial Number Range
Please review the Effective Serial Number Range table listed, to determine if the vehicle was produced between November 1996 and February 1997.
Procedure
1. Prior to performing this Service Campaign, please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.
DANGER!
Injury Hazard when testing or repairing airbags or emergency tensioning retractors.
2. Prior to performing this Recall Campaign, carefully review and adhere to the safety instructions as indicated in the following documents: See WIS: AS91.00-Z-0001-01A, AH91.00-P-0002-01B and AH91.00-P-0004-01A. Additionally, review this Recall Bulletin entirely prior to performing the recall itself.
3. Remove ignition key from ignition lock.
4. Remove both front door interior panels, see WIS document: AR72.10-P-1000F
5. Drill out rivets (1, Figure 1) of retaining plate (3, Figure 1) for left side airbag (2, Figure 1), see WIS Document AR91.60-P-0690A "Removing and installing side airbag in front door".
6. Remove left side airbag from driver's door frame and then disconnect side airbag wiring harness connector at the left side airbag squib (R12/9, Figure 1).
7. Once removed, place left side airbag into shipping container of the replacement left side airbag.
Note:
Please follow the instructions as per the "Hazardous Material Shipping Guidance Form" and return each removed left/right side airbag in its shipping container only.
8. Drill out rivets (1, Figure 1) of retaining plate (3, Figure 1) for right side airbag (2, Figure 1), see WIS Document AR91.80-P-0690A "Removing and installing side airbag in front door".
9. Remove the right side airbag from the passenger's door frame and disconnect side airbag wiring harness at the right side airbag squib (R12/10, Figure 1).
10. Once removed, place right side airbag into shipping container of the replacement right side airbag.
Note:
Please follow the instructions as per the "Hazardous Material Shipping Guidance Form" and return each removed left/right side airbag in its shipping container only.
11. Visually inspect the left/right side airbag wiring harness as installed in each of the front doors. Ensure that each one of the side airbag wiring harnesses do not in anyway chafe or are pinched against any part of the door frame. Repair each of the left/right airbag harnesses as necessary if found to be chaffing or pinched in any way against the door frame, see WIS document: AR54.18-P-0600A, "Repairing wiring harness of supplemental restraint system (SRS) ignition squibs". Please see Special Tools table in this document for special tools required to repair the wiring harness.
Note:
Nozzles and reflectors as contained in the Electrical connector set are designed to be used with heat gun: Steinel; Model HL 1802 E. Available via the MBUSA Standard Service Equipment Program (SSEP), for ordering instructions please call 1-888-458-4040.
12. Install the replacement left/right side airbags in reverse order, see WIS Document AR91.60- P-0690A "Removing and installing side airbag in front door".
Note:
When connecting the left/right side airbag wiring harness to the left/right side airbag unit ensure that the wiring harness connector audibly catches when reconnecting the left/right side airbag squibs (R12/9, R12/10).
Note:
Rivet gun: Gesipa Model HN-2 is required to install left/right side airbags, using the steel rivets as listed in Parts Information. Please see the MBUSA Standard Service Equipment Program (SSEP), for ordering instructions please call 1-888-458-4040.
13. Perform diagnosis for the left/right side airbag, see Diagnostic Manual, Volume 5.1, section 16.3.
Note:
Carefully review the entire section 16.3 prior to performing the diagnosis.
14. Insert ignition key into ignition lock and turn ignition on, thereafter the SRS MIL lamp should illuminate and then extinguish, indicating normal function.
15. Reinstall removed door panels in reverse order, see WIS document: AR72.10-P-1000F.
