INSTALLATION OF CELLULAR TELEPHONE (CTEL) SYSTEM
Attached to this Service Information are Work Instructions no. 381A for installation of the cellular telephone (CTEL) system in model year 1997 and 1998 model 129 and 140 vehicles.
NAM Programming Guide S-2503-P97 (copy included in this SI) is valid for M.Y. 1997 and 1998 model 129, 140, with Portable CTEL (for use with core kit no. Q 6 82 0253) only.
Note:
The instructions for the NAM programming will only be included with this SI and not with the guide itself.
Registration:
Installation of all MB cellular telephone (CTEL) systems must be reported to MBNA. Installation prior to or at time of retail MUST be recorded through VISTA when the vehicle sale is reported. However. once the vehicle has been reported sold, all subsequent installations must be registered by sending a CELLULAR TELEPHONE INSTALLATION / WARRANTY REGISTRATION form to Mercedes-Benz of North America. Inc., Warranty Operations. Please photocopy forms shown in section 3 of the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual.
If the installation of a MB cellular telephone is not registered with MBNA Warranty Operations, future claims for the unit will be denied.
Notes:
^ The transfer of a telephone system from one vehicle to another voids the warranty.
^ This system may be installed in Model Year 1995 through 1998 129 and 140 vehicles.

INSTALLATION OF CELLULAR TELEPHONE (CTEL) SYSTEM
Installing In-dash controller (IDC)
1. Unpack contents of Installation kit and compare to part's list at end of Work instructions. Read through entire procedure to familiarize yourself with sequence of instructions and parts. Remove Operating Guide from kit and place in Owner's Literature portfolio.
2. Disconnect and cover negative battery terminal.
3. Remove two screws securing false back to eyeglass compartment. Remove false back to expose two 12-pole connectors and one microphone connector (Figure 1). Remove cables from false back. False back and original mounting screws may be discarded.
4. Install IDC mounting bracket. Position mounting bracket( so that mounting holes align with two false back mounting holes. Secure bracket with four M4x10 mm self tapping screws (the two additional holes have pre-punched bosses).
5. Connect two 12-pole connectors to in-dash controller. Connect microphone connector to connection on top center of controller (Figure 2).
6. Secure left cable and microphone cable to clips on back of IDC. Slide in-dash controller into bracket and snap into place (Figure 3) - DO NOT PRESS ON THE LCD DISPLAY.
Installing portable handset (HS)
Model 129
1. Remove carpeting from center console.
2. Cut and remove all styrofoam from underside of carpeting. Remove material from lip around the underside of carpeting so reinforcing plate can lie flat.
3. Place reinforcing plate on back of carpeting (Figure 4).
4. Locate, punch and drill tour inner holes to 5 mm.
5. Insert four screws through reinforcing plate and carpeting. Mount charger-holder on carpeting and tighten screws.
6. Drill outer holes through carpeting to match the diameter of the mounting plate holes.
7. Remove two forward screws in center console compartment.
8. Place angular bracket in console with raised edge of bracket pointing towards the rear of the compartment. Secure bracket using the two removed screws.
9. Locate two harnesses at rear of compartment. A coaxial antenna connector is taped to a 12-pole data cable labeled PORTABLE PHONE. The other 12-pole data cable is not labeled.
10. Connect antenna adapter cable (arrow, Figure 4) between antenna harness and pigtail on back of charger-holder. Connect harness labeled PORTABLE PHONE to charger-holder.
11. Replace carpeting and charger-holder into center console compartment, routing the harness along right side of compartment. Secure carpeting with two screws (arrows, Figure 5) to angle bracket in compartment.
Model 140 (MY 1995 - 1997)
1. Remove carpeting from right side of console.
2. Locate two harnesses on right side of console:
^ a 12-pole male and a female coax connector taped together (labeled "Portable Phone").
^ a 12-pole female and a male coax connector (from armrest).
3. Connect male and female coax connectors together as described. Disconnect 12-pole female connector (from armrest). Remove protective cover from 12-pole male connector (Portable Phone) (transfer cover to open female connector). Connect 12-pole female to 12-pole male (Portable Phone) connector.
4. Remove and discard cupholder assembly.
5. Route antenna cable in grooves on back of charger-holder. Tape cable in place.
6. Connect short 12-pole/8-pole harness 10 charger-holder.
7. Route coil cord and 8-pole connector through oval opening in rear of trim piece.
8. Route coil cord back through round hole in trim piece.
9. Push coaxial coupling into hole in front of armrest (Figure 6). DO NOT PINCH CABLE.
10. Fasten charger/holder to armrest using 2 screws. Cover rear hole with plastic plug. Cover front hole with plastic plug and adhesive pad.
11. Connect portable phone and coil cord connector (Figure 7).
Model 140 MY 1998
1. Open driver's side arm rest lid.
2. Locate coaxial cable and 8-pole connector behind cover at rear of armrest. Coax connector is attached to the connector cover.
3. Connect short 12-pole/8-pole harness to charger/holder and to connector in armrest.
4. Connect coaxial cable from charger/holder 10 coaxial cable in armrest.
5. Secure holder to armrest using 2 screws.
6. Cover rear hole with plastic plug. Cover front hole with plastic plug and adhesive pad.
7. Connect portable phone to coil cord.
B. Installing 3 watt booster and portable adaptor assembly Model 129
1. Remove left trunk panel.
Note:
If the Mercedes-Benz CD changer is also installed. its bracket will be used for the telephone. The telephone components mount on the outer wall of the CD bracket. The bracket supplied with the telephone is NOT required.
2. Place booster into mounting plate.
3. Install portable adaptor assembly on top of mounting plate, and secure assembly to trunk bracket using 2, 8-32x2" screws (Figure 8).
4. Remove protective caps from studs in bottom of wheel well. Partially remove carpeting from left trunk area. Install clip to longitudinal rail over existing hole.
5. Route speaker and power antenna control connectors from 25-pole breakout cable: 12 pole data cables (2); 4 pole power connector and antenna coax cables (2) through opening in trunk liner panel.
6. Connect coax cable to vehicle antenna splitter terminal labeled "telefon".
7. Connect speaker connector from 25-pole cable to vehicle's speaker plug.
8. Disconnect 4-pole power connector from antenna, remove locking strap and insert bare, 2.5 mm connector. into position "2". Reinstall locking strap and reconnect to vehicle's antenna.
9. Reinstall trunk liner.
10. Connect all CTEL components:
^ Connect 16-pole jumper from booster to portable adapter assembly.
^ Connect coax cable from vehicle antenna to booster connector labeled "antenna".
^ Connect coax cable (taped to data cable) to booster connector labeled "portable".
Note:
Ensure that the coax cable connections to the booster ("bullets" 2 and 3 listed above) are properly connected. DO NOT REVERSE!
^ Connect 12-pole data cable (unlabeled) to 12-pole female connector on 25-pole breakout cable.
^ Connect 12-pole data cable (labeled Portable Phone) to portable adaptor assembly.
^ Connect 4-pole power to portable adapter assembly.
^ Secure cables with wire ties.
11. Place completed assembly over studs in wheel well, and secure with nuts and sheet metal screw.
12. Program telephone.
13. Recode radio.
14. Test tunction.
Note:
When installing CTEL together with a CD changer:
^ Place booster into mounting plate.
^ Secure plate to CD bracket using M4x6 screws.
^ Place portable adaptor assembly onto mounting plate, and secure to CD bracket with 8-32x2" screws; or secure to mounting plate using M4 screws and nuts, as needed.
Model 140
1. Remove left rear trunk liner panel.
2. Assemble booster to mounting plate in vehicle using end brackets (ensure that the 16-pole DIN connector is on top).
3. Insert well nuts into two large openings on mounting plate (arrows. Figure 10).
3a. For MY 1995 through early production MY 1998 Secure plate from retrofit kit to trunk bracket.
4. Secure portable adaptor assembly to trunk bracket/retrofit bracket as applicable using 8-32 screws and nuts.
5. Connect coax cable to vehicle antenna splitter terminal labeled "Telefon".
6. Connect speaker connector from 25-pole cable to vehicle's speaker plug.
7. Disconnect 4-pole connector from antenna. Open connector locking strap. Insert bare connector into location "2" of the 4-pole connector. Insert from rear of connector. Observe proper pin orientation. Close locking strap. Reconnect 4-pole connector to antenna.
8. Make connections to CTEL components:
^ Connect 16-pole jumper from booster to portable adapter assembly.
^ Connect coax cable from vehicle antenna to booster connector labeled "antenna".
^ Connect coax cable (taped to data cable) to booster connector labeled "portable".
^ Connect 12-pole data cable (unlabeled) to 12-pole female connector on 25-pole breakout cable.
^ Connect 12-pole data cable (labeled Portable Phone) to 12-pole connector on portable adaptor assembly.
Note:
Ensure that the coax cable connections to the booster ("bullets" 2 and 3 listed above) are properly connected. DO NOT REVERSE!
9. Secure loose wires/cables with cable ties. Reinstall left wheel well liner.
10. Program telephone.
11. Recode radio.
12. Re-synchronize window settings.
13. Test function.

NAM Programming
A. Preparation
1. Turn telephone ON.
2. When "Power On" appears in display, press Rcl and Menu simultaneously. The display will show "NAM Code:".
3. Enter 10 digit programming password (*-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-#) A dash "-"will appear as each digit is entered. Steps 2 and 3 must be completed within 20 seconds after "Power On" display.
4. When the correct code is entered the display will indicate the software version on the top line and the ESN in the box on the bottom line.
5. Press arrow down key
"Tel. Num. 1 Program" appears, followed by 111-111-0111.
B. To enter NAM 1
1. Enter complete telephone number with area code. Press Sto then arrow down key.
2. "Phone # 1: A key?" followed by "Enter A - key Number" appears. If carrier requires authentication enter code number. Press Sto then arrow down. If authentication is not required press arrow down.
3. Enter System ID Number (System ID), Press Sto then arrow down.
4. Initial Paging Channel (IPCH) value predetermined by System ID Number, Press arrow down.
5. Enter Access Overload Class (ACCOLO #), Press Sto then arrow down.
6. Group ID Mark (GIM), Press Sto then arrow down.
7. Press "Clr" once, "Tel. Num. 2 Program" will appear. If a second and/or third number are to be entered, continue with NAM 2 and/or NAM 3 programing. If only one number is to be programmed, press arrow down twice while "Tel. Num. 2 Program" is displayed until "Emergency #: 911" is displayed. Continue with section 0D
C. To enter NAM 2 and/or NAM 3
1. Enter complete telephone number with area code, Press Sto then arrow down.
2. "Phone # 2 (or # 3) A - key?" followed by "Enter A - key Number" appears. If carrier requires authentication enter code number, press Sto then arrow down. If authentication is not required, press arrow down.
3. Enter System ID Number (System ID), Press Sto then arrow down.
4. Initial Paging Channel (IPCH) value predetermined by System ID Number, Press arrow down.
5. Enter Access Overload Class (ACCOLC #), Press Sto then arrow down.
6. Enter Group ID Mark (GIM). Press C once to change the emergency number (see below for details) or to proceed with NAM 3 Prg, or press C twice rapidly to exit NAM2 Program mode. "Power On" appears and the telephone is ready for use.
D. Following completion of NAM 1, NAM 2 and NAM 3 (as required), press arrow down to continue with NAM options programming.
1. "Emergency #: 911" appears. If 911 is the desired number, press arrow down. If a number other than 911 is desired, enter the number, press Sto then arrow down.
2. "Clear Mem. Locations" appears followed by "To Reset Press". Press" "*" to clear memory locations 0 - 99, then press arrow down. If you do not wish to clear memory locations, press arrow down.
3. "Default Data Set" appears, followed by "To Reset Press". Press "*" to reset all "USER MENU FEATURES" to their factory settings, then press arrow down. If you do not want to reset user menu features press arrow down.
4. "Unlock No. 1234" appears.
To change the code, enter a 4 - digit code then press Sto. Press arrow down to continue. If you do not wish to change the code, press arrow down.
5. "Language Option" appears. followed by the current selection. To change the display language. press "RCL" to view the options (English or Spanish), then press Sto when your desired selection appears. Press arrow down to continue.
Note:
Only the display language is selectable. The Voice Activation Dialer (VAD) language is always English.
6. "Option Bit" appears.
Enter the appropriate 8 - digit code from the table on page 1 Press Sto to save. then press arrow down to continue.
7. "Pers. Pref." appears.
Do not change these settings (000 11 000). Press arrow down to continue.
8. "Car Config." appears.
The normal setting is 000 10 100. To disable the Voice Activated Dialer, set to 000 00 100. then press Sto.
NAM programming is now complete. Press CLR. "Power On" will appear.
